My '71 original axles had no torque arm. I am not sure why they were used on the early years and not later.

I thought the 71 had a bumpstop on the frame that contacted the leaf springs directly.

My 71 had the arm on the axle when I bought it. I swapped out my dana 27 a7 years ago for a dana 30. A member here who lived in Texas bought my dana 27.

The 71 does have bumpstop on frame
Thought arm might keep axle from twisting?
So 69 and earlier have bumpstop on extended arm?

V6 only. Some had an arm on the passenger side of the axle that extended rearward and would contact an angle bracket on on the frame that had a rubber cushion.
Others may have had a -U- shaped bracket attached to the bottom of the frame that would limit travel at the back of the passenger side spring.

    I've got a fairly original '71 and '69.

The '69 has the torque arm on the right side of the front axle with a stopper riveted to the frame:

The '71 has no torque arm but has additional low hanging bump stops welded to the frame that hit the spring behind the axle to prevent the axle from twisting. It has them on both sides instead of just the right side:

Consensus is this more is to prevent the front driveshaft from hitting the starter on suspension compression than controlling the massive torque of the 225.

The 66 V6 donor Jeep I used had one on it, so I put it back on when I done my 64 with a F 134 motor.

My '71 was apparently missing the stopper attached to the frame. The JEEP was lifted when I got it so maybe it was removed when the lift was installed???

I think Fireball nailed it all down pretty well in his post.

Correction my 69 has remnants(rubber gone) on both sides of frame like my 71 both v6.
My guess AMC deleted that ARM for some reason.
Look like good ideal to me so kept and exchanged carrier and gears.
