    That or sacked. Whichever term you prefer.

    As far as the type of seal. felt is all I've ever used. I always figured that the outer felt seal was to keep junk out of the assembly whereas the rubber seal that installs into the knuckle itself is what actually keeps the lubricant contained inside the knuckle area. I think the felt is referred to as a wiper rather than a seal. But I could be wrong.

    I would guess that driving in wet and freezing weather would be hard on the knuckle seals and felt wipes if water droplets should freeze in the balls. As I remember my brothers ol 3B often got muddy water in the knuckles. We drove the jeep daily year round back then, often fording deep water in the river and creek crossings. The old ball type front axle joints finally wore out and we replaced them with spicer joint/axles. The knuckle joints and front differential required maintaince much more often than the other gear boxes.
