Hi all. I have read a lot of threads on carb replacement, and know that the Rochester 2G is a good/solid carb to work with. My 5,800-mile '71 CJ-6 (fire station Jeep...pics below) is at a local mechanic, who was going to rebuild the carb for me. I just got a call this morning, mentioning that after the carb clean-up, they found pin holes/corrosion in the carb, rendering it non-rebuildable. They're checking with some local sources to see if they can source another small-base 2G, but at this point, they haven't found one yet.

They did mention that they have a Dodge carb (Holley) from the late '80s that they believed would work.

Given that my 2G is not usable:

    1. Is there a quality aftermarket carb that fits the bill? I've seen both the Motorcraft 6-289 and Holly 2300 Series 2 mentioned in another thread.
    2. Any other recommendations? I'm fine buying a new unit to move the process along...the mechanic has had my Jeep for a month already.
    Thanks,
    Craig

There is a vendor selling rebuilt carbs on E-bay for $365: https://www.ebay.com/itm/370782761423

Another option is posting a WTB ad in the classified section. It's pretty likely another member has one they would part with.

I bought a 2gc from the eBay place and it worked well for years and I only took off for fuel injection. Good customer service too, they replaced first one no questions asked for what i later found out was probably a timing issue.

Make sure you get your old carb back from the shop and all the brackets and attachments you are going to need.

I bought one from this seller. Just be aware that you would want to go thru the carb when you get it. I found the jet size wrong and missing the spring and ball under the “T” stake! Also the float was missing the clip for the needle seat.

eBay usually has Dauntless v6 Jeep carbs for $325 or so. Also small block chevys used a small base 2gc, if all you need is a body. I have found many carb specialty shops that have some pretty esoteric carbs and parts. Good luck!

Good to know, and thanks for the heads-up. I did order the carb from this place last night, and still have my old carb for spare parts. I definitely won't scrap it.

    Thanks, all, for your input!

The carb itself is a great base to start with. Each person has a different experience with these from eBay. Going thru it though is crucial, as I found out.

The i5 Automotive carb has things running nicely now, although it had some minor differences relative to the one that was originally on the vehicle. I only drove it about a mile home tonight, but will be shaking it out around town soon.

Do you want original or do you want better performance? Some great options for stock have been suggested above.

If you want to improve performance, Weber DGAS 38. They have a specific kit that will come with the 2bbl adapter.

32/36 is great for a stock F-134, can be tuned to work well with the V6, offering good MPG, but to gain the most in performance if that's of interest to you, 38 DGAS Outlaw. Call Redline Performance to discuss the options and recommendations.

Thanks for the input, but it's already a done-deal...I got a replacement Rochester 2GC, which seems to have done the trick. (y)
