Hey guys-I been kicking around the idea of getting some lights. I like the look of Warns SDB series but at 400 and some change they ain't cheep. I know theres some cheaper ones out there but is a $400 Warn light really worth it? :?

Uh, no. Buy that and you're gonna worry about it getting ripped off.

I have some used Hella's that came on SSDutch I'd sell you for $40. The covers need replacing but lights look good. I even have a set of w/s brackets I'd throw in for $10.

    You can see them here:

Otherwise there's a bunch of choices on eBay.

The Warns are nice, but I'd go KC or Hella.

best mod on the truck has been the headlights, I run silverstars on the lows and the "cool blue" for the highs.

We've discussed H4 conversions here before. My TJ lights are IPF H4's. The bulb's are legal wattage. Technically the reflectors are illegle in some states but chances are unless you have inspections (swap 'em out) no one's gonna gripe. What Tim said about the cut off applies here. They made a WORLD of difference in being able to see.

Just to toss this in here, as you guys get a little older and you start getting a little far sited or have a touch of night blindness, you will not think these mods are so great, I have a touch of night blindness in my left eye due to a failing cornea, that will probably be replaced in about another year and half, but right now the younger guys that want to light up the road a mile and half in front of there car kill my vision. The guys that drive down 2 lane country roads do not realize how bad those extra bright lights hurt other peoples eyes, especially some of the slightly older crowd. The jerk that wants to tailgate with his high beams and/or driving lights in my rear view torque me pretty bad and I have been known to whip a Q beam out and point it out my back window, that usually scares the crap out of them and gets them to turn the lights down. Now I'm not griping at anyone specific, but when you use those extra bright lights out on the road think about others while using them and please use them appropriately, not all of us have perfect vision that can tolerate those overly bright lights.
Now I know I'm probably gonna take a lot of flack over this but alot of driving revolves around courtesy and this is part of it.

    Thanks!!!!!!!

I understand where Mike is coming from, but with the headlight conversions, you shouldn't cause any trouble as long as you are considerate about dimming your lights. The only problem I noticed was pulling up behind sports cars in traffic; mostly becasue of the bulb height on a CJ. Summit sells the Hella headlights with the 60/55W bulbs, and their site says these are DOT approved. They also sell the 100/55W bulbs, which aren't DOT approved but shouldn't cause trouble if you are considerate. There's also a 100/90W bulb, but that's probably going too far.

After the headlights, I'd choose a pair of driving lights mounted at bumper height or below. These will help a lot in fog or rain - the lower the angle to your line of site, the better - less reflection off the fog.

hey mike i understand what you are saying since i swear my night vision has gone downhill ever since i started welding. buuuutttttt i would much rather see something that is going on for 30 seconds before i need to decided on my actions then the time of the action. I spend a lot of night driving on hiways and being able to see a few hundred yards is critical. also when bombing down back roads at night i like to be able to see the deer with plenty of time before i am slamming on the brakes trying to keep from hitting them.

Absolutely. However since I've had the H4's I've only had one maybe 2 flashes. With my old lights I couldn't see anything and the people approaching me couldn't either. ;)

They're just European Code not DOT code lights. Sharper cutoff for oncoming traffic and the high beams are something to see.

i've got the h4' in the cherokee, and they're a big step up from stock. and yes, i have the 90/100 bulbs on there, but have no flashes from anyone that i can recall...it's all about aiming the beams so that youaren't blinding the people comingat ya. i'd even suggest this swap before doing the driving lights. i've got a set of hellas up front running a 100W bulb in them and you really can't tell when they're turned on now, the beam just goes from a white light to more of a yellowish color.

i will say that when i go hrough hings and start dropping tons of money in the cj again i wil be putting the h4's in...
