Keep My Dana 25 Or Clean Up And Use A Dana 27 With A Power Lock .

I got a hand me down Dana 27 with 3.73 gears with a Power Lock. Currently, I running a 25 and a 44 with 4.27 gears and I've been pretty happy with what I think is a "happy middle". So one of many questions I have is 1, do I clean up this Dana 27 and run it instead of my 25? if so, what am I look at as far as cost and difficulty to swap out the 4.27 ring and pinion out of my 44 out back to a 3.73? is it worth it?

2, if I choose not to do the above mentioned, are there any parts on this 27 worth keeping? In other words, will any of the internal parts work as spare parts for my 25 like hubs, axles, etc? Finally, is there any value of the Power Lock or are they just garbage? Can I use it in my 25?

I don't see the 27 as a big improvement over a 25 like the 30 is. Gears would depend on motor and driving style.
Knuckles out are usable as spares. Power lock does have value to the right people.

 

Im running a Dauntless 225. And I mostly do around town driving with some light off roading from time to time. If I try to sell the Power lock, do I need to the supply the 3.73 ring and pinion with it? What are they usually going for?

 

I see that Herm The Overdrive Guy offers some kind of kit that allows me to install this Power Lock into my 25. Can I do this with my current 4.27 gears in my 25? is it worth the money/trouble?

 

Are you having problems with the 25? If not, leave it, unless you want to have a project and spend some money. Do you really want to go up to 3.73's? If you do go with the 27, you could change the gears to 4.27, but I don't think the gear split allows that on a 3.73 carrier. Someone might correct me, but I think the split is 3.73 and up, so you would need a different carrier in either front or rear end to make that swap.

 

Im very happy with my 25 as it is. I think I'm leaning on stripping this 27 down and keep what swaps over for spare parts. As far as the Power lock, are they worth anything?

 

Yes, guys are always looking for them. A much stronger carrier. But the 3.73 part is not that desirable. If it was the lower gear carrier, I'd say $250. And some D27 parts are getting hard to find, ring and pinions for one.

 

Sounds like I need to leave well enough alone regarding my 25. I'll strip the 27 down and throw the Power Lock with the ring and pinion up for sale next week. if anybody wants a free dana 27 axle case, its located in So Cal, let me know. I would give it all away however, I did a bunch of work/ trading with the PO for this axle and some other stuff.

 

Yep, the D27 isn't much of an improvement on the D25. I will no longer spend any money on either. If they need any more than, say, wheel bearings, just replace with a D30.

 

I think you’re right on the money there. I disassembled the 27 this morning. I kept the axle shafts, knuckles, king pins, etc. I yanked out the power lock which has 3.73 gears. Is this power lock married to this ring and pinion? In other words, can I use this for 4.27 gearing in my 25?
