Well I sold my Heavy Iron 1953 M37 today and found a 1962 CJ5 with a V6 in it. Not sure and the owner isn't if it is the original engine or not. Reading sites it looks like the 198 was put in them in 62 and the engine paint is blue in color with a 2 bar carb. Tomorrow I am going to look for numbers on the block and manifold. Looks pretty clean 2nd owner rig with no rust and runs good. The owner is a older guy like me and has not beat it yet. Everything works and it has a "Best-Top" I think, cost over 700.00 and looks good. Full role cage just put in. Price was $3,200.00 for it. Is the 1962 a rare one with the Fire Ball 198 if that is the engine? How many did they make that year. New to Jeeps but not to 4X4s. Have owned a 48 Power Wagon and a 53 M37 along with a 48 Jeepster 2x4 when I was 15 but that was 39 years ago. Any help in what to look for would be nice and if I am buying the wrong Jeep for my real first one? Thanks, Mark

They never put the 198 V6 in them, so it's not original. Almost certainly would have had an F-head, 134 c.i. 4 cyl. A few had Perkins diesels, those were the 2 engines back then. Funny you mentioned an M37, I just recently bought a '52 to restore. Tell us where you live also. It's really hard to say about the value of the Jeep in question. Crawl over it again and describe it as best you can. Also funny you're apparently the same age as me. Check out the front end steering components, look for leaks, etc. Of course drive it too. Check springs condition, look for sagging, rusty frame, crossmembers etc. Does it have a drawbar on the back? How about the tailgate, does it say Willys?

54 is a wonderful age! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I'd hope its the 225 engine you have. I think its a more common swap than the 198. Welcome to Jeep World.

It has a Draw Bar on the back that I think is stock. Deffintly a V-6 and I found some pictures of the bell housing to check to see if it is a 198 or 235 engine. It does say Willy's on the Tail Gate. The guy said he did not know much about the engine and is a freind of mine. He has owned it for a long time about 10 plus years. Oh I live in Okanogan, Washington State and close to 54 years old now but still young at heart! The M37s are a heavy duty truck to own, mine was a real nice one and could pull some steep hills but only got 12 miles to the gal in town. I will miss the 360 lbs of skid plates I had on it along with the PTO Winch. I did notic the Jeeps are near as storg built under them but then my M37 also was 5,680 lbs of iron to! Hope to get over and look for numbers tomorrow. I would like the engine to be a 225 and not the 198 as they only were used 2 years and no parts exchange on them. Guess I will be posting here now that I own a Jeep. Mark

Well I sure felt better when I was 30 but in no way am I old yet!! This will be a new experiance to me going light weight! My neibor has a Long Nose CJ5 but it is all fixed up with lots of Mods to the drive train. I was hoping to only lift it 2 inches, different tires and trim it out some with some goodies but we all know how that goes!! Some day I want to build a UniMog and see how they go off road. I think you'll enjoy a Jeep because they're so nimble. Strong for their size, but the M37 is just a massive beast.

Here is a link to some oictures of the 1953 M37, 1948 Power Wagon and 1985 Water Tender I built in the last couple of years. I haven't any of the Jeep yet but will soon. Mark

The easiest way to tell which engine it is, is to id the bellhouse. But since it has the 2 bbl carb, I'll take a stab and say its either a 225 or 231. Not sure if they put a 2bbl on the 198's?? could've been easily swapped in though. Let us know what you have once you find out.
