After I park my JEEP it leaks gear oil. The question I have is from what. If I didn't know better I would think it was the rear main engine seal but it isn't leaking engine oil.

If it is coming from the rear of your engine area, it is probally transmission front seal. Engines that leak gear oil means someone put the wrong oil in the engine.

Tranny / transfer case. Almost every JEEP leaves it's mark in such a way ;)

I'm leaking a lot. How hard is it to replace the seal?

Depends on which one it is. The first step is to verify its origin. Clean the underside of the jeep and check up on it until you find the leak. Then we can be sure we are repairing the correct seal.

If someone put gear oil in your crank case, you have bigger problems than a leak.......

I've checked and it is not engine oil.

Can you tell me where it is coming from for sure. As stated before you may need to clean it up before you can identify the source.

dohc281, The first thing I would do it is check all fluid levels if it’s leaking should be low. Then wash off underside of Jeep ( as mentioned above). Place a large piece of cardboard on the ground under the engine, tranny and t/c. Make marks on the cardboard to indicate its location in relation to the tires and the car's front and rear. Leave it in place overnight. Use rocks to hold it down if you park outside. (Some oil leaks occur only when the engine is running, but the cardboard method will still help locate these kinds of leaks, because the oil will drip down.) Good luck and let us know what you find.

Good call with the cardboard. Never thought of that method.
