Oil filter close to axel pumpkin

Hello, I have a Cj5 chasse with a cj3 body. It has a Buick v6 which puts the oil filter directly over the axels pumpkin, killing clearance. I don't know much about the different V6 options the original CJ5's came with, but this cant be a stock setup. After shearing my oil filter, I install a remote filter which helps. My question is this: was this forward facing oil filter a different version V6 (out of another vehicle) than the stock V6's? I would like to know what Year engine I have because this is confusing me. I cant find any pictures or info on this forward facing oil filter. Thank you

the jeeps had a forward facing filter. cars had a down facing one. also should have a secondary bumpstop on the pass side frame and axle to prevent the axle meeting the filter.

Yes, but let's clarify.
Most car engines do use the oil pump housing/oil filter adapter you speak of. The filter does go straight out, or towards the radiator. That housing will position the filter directly over the axle pumpkin. As you have alredy found out, that can have dire consequences; It is not to be used in CJs.
The correct oil pump housing should have GM # 1382760 stamped externally into the relief valve/spring passageway. This housing positions the filter at an aprrox 45* angle off the corner of the engine block, which improves filter clearance in this area. If I had both side by side I could take a pic; but I only have the correct housing in front of me.
If you have the correct housing, then maybe a smaller OD oil filter will work. This would give you another 1/2" additional clearance.
The factory stock oil filter would be about 3.75" in diameter; it is short and pudgy; the other, smaller diameter filter is only 2.75" in diameter, and is slighly longer. The difference of the 2 filters is the space (gap) between the sealing o-ring (gasket) and the outer filter body. The smaller filter has the o-ring right next to the oil filter body. You could run this filter also.
The factory Jeep V6 oil filter P/N is: J8993146 (same as all AMC V8s)
the smaller diam filter is Jeep P/N: J8133965 (I believe this to be the later 258 I6 oil filter)
parts store can cross reference the numbers for you
Also as mentioned above, you might want to look at suspension soloutions as well as a soloution to your problem.

FWIW: many moons ago, Jeep changed the part number and was supplying the incorrect housing to its dealers. We had to start buying from Chevrolet to get the correct housing. So it is possible for a PO to purchase the incorrect housing which positions the filter incorrectly.
If you think you have the incorrect housing, then a quick trip to your local GM dealer might be in order (or other parts supplier) to visually compare the differences I speak of.
