Just want to say thanks to everyone who responded to the other thread and let you all know how it went.

The fan Oldjeep suggested came today and I went to work mounting it. After much measuring and test fitting, the top of the inner grill was banged upwards for clearance (CJ2A grills aren't very tall to start with) and holes were drilled in a couple pieces of 3/4" x 3/16" steel. The steel was welded to the grill to hold the fan. Wired it up and ran it. Definitley better than the fan I had tried earlier, but I didn't hear the jet taking off roar I'm used to hearing on Oldjeep's Jeep. Decided to take it for a drive anyways. Never got above 195. Had my friend Paul with me on the test run, he's an XJ addict and we had to pull over to see the price on a rusty XJ on the way back. The Jeep wouldn't start again after that, and the cell phone saved the day. My wife showed up with the TJ and the humiliated CJ2A was dragged home for about a mile and a half. I think I actually heard someone laugh at me.

Anyways, got home and eventually figured out that points were the problem. Filed them, put it back together and drove into the garage to start cleaning up after the evenings activities. Noticed directions for fan install while throwing away the packaging. Figured it couldn't hurt to read them after the fan was in. Guess I was supposed to reverse the blade for pusher opperation. During the initial install I saw the non-reusable push nut and figured this was not the case and just wired it backwards. Dug through the install kit and found another push nut, and flipped the blade. Of course I reversed the wiring at the same time and the fan performed the same as before, but blowing the wrong way. Reversed the wiring again (back to initial configuration) and was rewarded with the Jet taking off roar that Oldjeeps fan has. Airflow at least doubled from how it was on the test drive.

I didn't drive it again after that. The points need replacing and I had to re-wire the alternator and wire up the head lights and my wife had told me 'no more test drives, I'm going to bed.

Tomorrow I'm going to put hardware cloth on the inside of the grill to prevent children and small animals from being sucked inside by the fan.

Should have warned you about the blade reversal. For some reason, I actually read the directions on mine before installing it, and that is when I realized that the blade on the fan I was replacing had been facing the wrong way for several years. :)

I second the HEI suggestion. Kind of a pain to get it on the first time, but maintenance free after that. Think I paid $25 for mine plus the price of a new coil and cap.

What electric fan are you using and are you still using the mechanical? I have a 5 blade flex fan. I'm just putting my new motor in so now would be the time to add the electric if I'm going to need it.

    $99 at Summit
Mounted in front of the radiator as a pusher.
Not running any mechanical fan - no space.

Mines going to be getting a new aluminum radiator pretty soon. My existing 1946 radiator has a couple cans of Stop leak in it, been that way for a couple years but I think when it starts getting hot here it may finally die.

    Thanks guys.

I ordered the Petronix Ignitor and expoxy filled coil from Summit right after I wrote that :)

HEI was the frist thing that crossed my mind, but my upper radiator inlet is off to the driver's side and I'm not sure if I have enough room for it. Besides, I've got solid core plug wires and I don't want to give them up ;)

I've been running the Pertronix on my 225 since '95. It's been flawless, except for the one time I was doing some late-night wiring... wired the hot wire directly to a good solid ground, and threw the switch. Didn't understand why it didn't work until the switch melted and left the smoke out. I toasted an ammeter, fusible link, and of course the Pertronix module.

Lately I've been thinking about what may happen if I "really" dunk my rig... will the module short out? I'd be screwed for parts 200 miles from home, local parts stores don't carry the module
I'm thinking about swapping in an HEI before I find out. Got one in the garage, just need to put in new stuff, grind the manifold, and stuff it in.

You'll love the Pertronix John... but if you run really deep water or do wiring when you are exhausted ;).... consider a spare module...
or keep a complete points/condensor set in your trail box.

I know your pain with the reversed fan. I have 2 electric fans and had the fans reversed so the fans were fighting each other. had a heck of a time trying to remember which way the fan blades were supposed to be, but finally got it all together and the jeep staqys nice and comfy at 180, if it goes any farther than that i know i have a fan that died.
