    Checked the driveshaft U-joints?

I'ld check your parking brake shoes, make sure they aren't rubbing on the inner face of the drum.

    Otherwise I second the u-joints

I hear a pitter then patter on each revolution. Transmission tends to be once per revolution without an opposing "return" noise (at least for all my issues)

    Trouble shoot:
Is the sound engine or driveline RPM related? In another words, does the noise change with engine RPM regardless of which gear it is in or does it get faster when you upshift but the engine RPM's remain the same.
    Engine RPM: Clutch, input/countershaft issue.
Driveline RPM: Well, everything from the Bull gear back.

    Engine RPM:
first step is to put it in 3rd (high) gear.
Does the noise change? If so, then you are probably looking at a trans issue, possibly a tooth gone on the input/countershaft (high gear is straight through the trans with no load on the countershaft). Pull the trans lid and inspect the input/countershaft gears for any issues.

    Driveline RPM:
Drop the rear driveline. Does the noise go away?
If so, issue with the driveline/rear diff.
If not, The issue is most likely the Bull gear, T case, parking brake.

    T case:
Inspect the parking brake for any broken parts.
At this time, you may want to drop the t case pan and inspect all gears for a broken tooth.

    Driveline:
Inspect U joints and slip joint.

    Rear diff:
    Try moving the pinion vertically.
Rotate the pinion by hand feeling for any irregularities.
Drop the cover and inspect the gears/diff for damage.

I suggest you flip your skidplate bolts. You run the risk of dragging them over something and blurring/bending the threaded end of the bolts, making disassembly a PITA.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    What jeepdaddy says.
Sounds like broken tooth to me.
But go thru the diagnostic steps he has listed above.

From the frequency and the secondary tap, my guess is a U-joint. If this is the case, you should be able feel this while rotating the driveshaft by hand, out of gear.
    Otherwise, follow jeepdaddy’s recommendations.
