OK, I'm a little embarassed to ask this because I've already done this conversion twice on my own (more than 25 years ago), but that was pre-computers & easy access to info. I don't want to re-invent the wheel, especially since I keep this jeep 200 miles from home...........I don't want to forget anything, I want to have it all with me the next time I go up there. I intend to convert a jeep (it happens to be a '55 Willys pick-up, but I posted this here because there's more traffic here & the answer would be the same no matter where I posted) from 6 to 12 volts for all the obvious reasons (radio, CB, winch, jump starts, etc.). Due to my personal philosophy I will not do anything that can't be easily undone because a fairly untouched vehicle of this vintage deserves the respect to be restored someday, or at least be given the option. For now, it's a work truck, & a pretty cool one at that IMO!

Anyway, based on my memory, all the light bulbs are easily replaced by 12 volt versions, right? The starter will be fine, although a unit wound for 12V would be better. The wires actually are better. The generator & voltage regulator can easily be replaced by a single-wire Delco unit after I figure out the belt alignment/arrangement. So, based on my memory my only concern should be the gas gauge. Since this one is so early it doesn't have the CJ type cluster like my Wagon, so there may not be a readily available 12V replacement laying on my shelf downstairs. I think I put a 6V gas gauge in a 12V truck once by adding a resistor, but that was a long time ago & now?????.........anybody got any ideas of what options I have for a 12V gas gauge? Or any info on anything I may have overlooked?

    Thanx in advance!

Actually, if you want to keep it as stock as possible and use 12v, I had success years ago by simply putting a voltage reducer on a '50 Studebaker I used to drive daily. I was able to keep everything as-is and still put the 12v battery in it.

I've never tried this on a jeep, but in theory it seems that it should be the same.

Thanx Beth, I thought about that, if I could find a voltage reducer, but then I'd still have to have the 12 volt alternator (or generator) to charge it the 12V battery. I'd also have the added complexity of two separate electrical systems & since my Dad will be using this fairly often when I'm not around it's probably best to keep it simple for him. But then again maybe I could just put it in line with the gas gauge & change out everything else to 12V..........hmmm.....any idea of where to get one of those & how much it would cost? gotta keep all options open. Thanx again!

Beth, thanx for the idea & Jim, thanx for the info!!! I did a "buy it now" on that thing as I doubt it would be any cheaper anywhere else, even if available. Even if I find a 12V gas gauge that converter item would still be handy to have around with all the old stuff I tend to, uh, aquire.

Oh yeah, I missed that one! I would have figured it out after it was too late to get one up there.

    Thanx!

Glad you got one. I got mine at Radio Shack at the time I think. I can't remember changing charging system or coil, but I must have.
