    Hey all,

I've read that the headlights on the M38's could be rotated inward to illuminate the engine compartment. I thought this would be a pretty neat thing to have on the CJ5 and was wondering if anyone had any insight on the project? Any M38 guys out there that could help out?

M38A1 Headlights could. If you get the right grill you might be able to do it.

Don't see what that would do that you couldn't do by putting an underhood light from a Chevy that has a retractable cord on it under there for cheaper though. JMO.

I don't see how. You couldn't even unbolt it and turn it around. The head light ring mounts would get in the way.

Sorry I don't have a picture of the headlights without the ring on it. :(

I don't know about the M38 and M38A1 headlights, they have the same fixed buckets IIRC. Now the MB/GPW series *DID* have the headlights on a hinge, and you undid a single wing nut to pivot the whole assembly up to change the bulb (not a sealed beam) or to illuminate the engine compartment.

Yeah I think Steve is right. I think its the MB/GPW you're talking about. Beth might be able to confirm.

I'd read/heard M38A1's had that capability too. So Brian's not the only one who's seen it somewhere. Not saying it makes it factual, just he's not alone in thinking that.

if i'm remembering right the trim ring isn't present on the a1's but, this image:

    http://www.m38a1.com/images/models/M170/m170_a.JPG

shows the a different hold dow ring screwed to the bucket. it could be done if you wanted to cut the buckets loose and put them on a hinge...and pretty easily i think. the only other thig that comes to mind is whether or not they would be able to swing on the arc and miss the fender. mybe the horn would get in the way of any light??

::edit:: better shot of A1 stuff...
