Good question. What is the current status of the t-case? Do you have it out, and determined the bearing is bad?

The case is out and I have the front housing off......I haven't taken the bearing out yet. The shaft had alot of play due to the bearing. The shaft appears to be ok.

What about the bearing seat, was it pitted or have dents in it from the bearing.

To clarify the bearing in question, are you talking about the bearing that is in the shifter housing? That's not really the output shaft bearing, and it is the kind that will wiggle/rotate with the shaft to compensate for bushing or shaft wear. The bushing is in the output shaft itself and the clutch shaft goes into the bushing. The output shaft bearing is the middle bearing.

    wow.
I looked at the exploded drawing of the xfer case. I see what you are saying. I was assuming that the excesssive play that I was seeing was because of the bearing in the shift housing. Thats the one I was asking about. Now looking at the diagram and from what you said......I am wondering if it is the shaft bushing or the middle bearing or maybe a combination of both.

The symptoms it has is I could grab my drive shaft at the yoke of the xfer case and it will move up/dn or side/side with alot of movement. I thought the yoke was loose but it was tight on the shaft.

Maybe I should just go ahead and replace the shaft bushing and the middle bearing to be safe?

Bearings are cheap compared to a busted case or something even worse. Can you actually move it vertically up and down, or is it really a wiggle? Regardless, I'd replace the bearings and the bushing. Especially since you've got it that far. Best just buy a rebuild kit and go for it.

Also, did you check the rear speedometer housing to make sure the bolts are tight, as this is what preloads these bearings. If it is loose the bearings will eventually move and cause slop to appear and it will appear in the front first.

I didn't check that....but in looking at it ...seemed tight. Guess I better take a look at it tonight.

Or from Herm, apparently he's cheaper. Sells Novaks' kit.

I just talked with Herm today about the bushing. They're only 3 bucks. You'd have to take it apart and do a wiggle test or figure out a way to measure it accurately. If this part or the front bearing in the front housing is that worn I would suspect the entire t-case may be ready for a rebuild.
