I had never been asked for mileage, ever, 'til 11 months after I insured a vehicle as a 5000 miles or less per year "sunday driver".

$416 a year, no theft, but 100k/300k liability, 5k medical, 100k/300k uninsured motorist, blah blah
strictly recreation and I'm the only driver of the Jeep
I carry more than most, that's just me

edit: in fact it's due in 11 days

Me too.... but the state max on uninsured/underinsured is only 50K here I believe. After the hit-and-run my dad suffered (while he was a pedestrian), I told them to max me out on medical and uninsured. My liability on the JEEP is 50/100 (twice the state minmum here).

I have a 46 and a 48 2A and a 1966 Chevy Nova SS insured with Hagerty Insurance and it costs $212.00 per year for all three for the liability & collision. They are at www.Hagerty.com.

i have antique tags and the state minimum insuance for arkansas on my 74.
the tag was around $20 and never expires (main reason i got it). i had to sign a piece of paper stating the jeep is original with an exception for safty equipment and improvments. it is original for the most part (i.e. no lift or mud tires)... but i figure modern tires are much safer than the originals. as are new seat belts, upgraded brakes, lights, seats etc.....
here in arkansas it is pretty easy to get and keep an antique tag and with no state inspection a cop would have to pull you over and figure out high back seats were not original in a 74. even then if the seats improved the safty i think they would be exempt.

as for insurance $200.00 or so at state farm, second vehicle not a daily driver but not exempt from driving to work or off-road or anything.

    NYEJOES11-

PA is really picky about issuing antiques plates, but if you have 4 good, clean color shots of "A" Jeep in "restored" condition, you will be golden. (Even if they aren't the *same* Jeep IYKWIM. ;))

There are those who will tell you that PA won't let you drive antique tags at night, etc, etc. That is crap. The limitation is that you DON'T use it for daily transportation, and that all equipment that was standard on the vehicle at the time of manufacture is intact and functioning normally. If you wish to drive an antique vehicle at night in PA, it *MUST* have current lighting, including turn signals. Hand signals won't cut it in PA at night. OH, and you are exempt from state inspection and emissions laws with antique plates. Classic plates on the other hand limit you to 2500 miles per year, and you still need an inspection annually, but no emissions. Both types of plates are a $75 one-time issuance fee and they never expire.

Most of the actual limitations are insurance-based, *NOT* DMV based. Because we had a major at-fault accident last year (20K loss) we are at bad-boy rates, and our carrier wanted ~$500 for liability only on the Jeep as a fourth vehicle. Haggerty www.haggerty.com quoted me $75 / year for antique insurance. Parades, special events and "occasional" daily use. No off-road coverage, and no coverage on my Jeep, only the other guy.

Get your photos, pay the $22 titling fee and the $75 plate fee and rock on!

I like the way you think Steve......I just read up on Kansas antique registration because I was curious after these posts. It looks like my wheels would "officially" disqualify me, but only if there was a inspection system in place. Other than that I meet all guidelines.

Oddly enough....digging up that information lead me to great news, information on titling my '65 that I had searched for in the wrong place all along, and was given the wrong information by the DMV. I only have a bill of sale.

In general, no matter what state you are in, it behooves you to learn and know your antique motor vehicle laws because in too many cases the police don't.

Steve was right on the money on all points. My GPW is still licensed with it's original PA antique tag (back when it was $25) and I have been in it when stopped with my dad for lack of turnsignals (we use hand signals) or questions about the military tailights. All are completely legal as they are the original equipment for 1943.

There are lots of pics on the web. ;)

    from the arkasnas DMV
"Description: Specialty license plate for antique (25 years or older) vehicle.
Eligibility: For historical or special interest vehicles or any vehicle that is twenty five (25) years old or older, which is essentially unaltered from the original manufacturers specifications.
Requirements: 1) Affidavit for license for an Antique Vehicle completed by the applicant. 2) If the vehicle is already titled and registered to the applicant, the registration certificate or other acceptable proof of ownership which includes the year, make, model, and vehicle identification number; OR 3) If the vehicle is not titled and registered to the applicant, the following: a) The previous title, if available, or if not, a bill of sale reflecting the year, make, model, and vehicle identification number; OR b) If the vehicle is assembled from a variety of sources, the owner may present bills of sale for the principal parts. The bills of sale should indicate the source and include the motor or body serial number.
    "

fee is only $7.00 for the life of the vehicle the additional cost i remember was for the new title since i had just bought the vehicle.

I still don't know. Allstate gave me an official "regular" registration insurance quote of $143 every 6 mos. I was thinking of plowing some snow- If I get spotted with antique plates doing that??????

I just registered my '61 yesterday as a "collector vehicle" and have insurance from Hagerty for $75.00 per year. The collector vehicle is restricted to 3000 miles per year and I can't see me going over that. The insurance is unbeatable since in NJ that is $500.00 for regular insurance and only liability if not more.
