Can someone with a late 1960s CJ5 look under their RH wheelhouse up behind the spare tire carrier and see if these two scallop shaped extra pieces of metal up towards the top inside of the wheelhouse are OEM?

Note: this is a Re-post from what the heck is this, didn’t get an answer there and I will delete this once I get an answer. Hoping to cut these things out tonight after work and make some progress.

My Jan 1970 production has nothing like that in the wheel well - Mine still has the spare tire support braces etc so it hasn't been messed with too much...those things look home-fabbed, maybe to increase the side tire mount strength?

Those are not original scabs welded in your fenderwell. It looks like someone drilled a big hole through both outer skin and inner fender in line with each other, maybe for some sort of bracket for the spare tire ??? These then recieved the scab patches you are referring to when the experiment didn't work.
What ever the reason, those are not original. Cut them out and weld them up.
You'll need to replace the inner bracing for the tire carrier that caused the rust you are repairing. There should have been a square baffle with a horizontal hat channel in there.

Cheers Donny thanks. Lord only knows why those extra bits got brazed on there…can’t think of how they would add any strength in terms of bracing…..

Anyway I’ve got a Classic spare tire brace and corner panel ready to go back in this weekend after I cut these suspect parts out and cleanup and replace the rot.

Maybe someone had a gas tank in the bed and that was for the fuel filler?

That makes sense!! The rear "V" cross member was cut out of the frame when I got the Jeep.
