I've just rebuilt my transfer case and I noticed my speedometer gear was chewed up. When I went to order a new one , both Krage & Walch's list a 14 and 15 tooth. The one I took out has 22. I have 4.88 gearing. Does anyone have an idea what the correct gear too count is for 4.88s?

Do a search.. jpflat2a gave all the information one day. There is a difference in terminology bewteen drive and driven gear. 22 is correct for 4.88's i think.

edit: from Jim's response I was talking about:

most likely, you have a 6 tooth drive gear, SW # 447331
this is inside the t/case on the mainshaft
most likely, you have an 18 tooth driven gear, SW # 448493
these are the gears that are listed for 4.27 ratio, factory
for 5.38 ratio, IMO, you are looking for 22 tooth, SW # 448495 driven gear
this would be the ideal gear.......if you can find one
another choice would be the 20 tooth, SW # 448494 driven gear
according to the book, the drive gear inside the t/case is the same
be aware that these gears are getting very difficult to find and are no longer available new
your choices are very limited, and your tire size will affect the speedo as well
most of us are "happy" just to be 5-10mph "off"

EDIT: the 3.73 ratio uses 16 tooth SW # 448856
    the 4.88 ratio uses 22 tooth SW # 448495
22 teeth is the max for this series of gears

So the gear on the main shaft is the same no matter what the tooth count on the driven gear is? The t-case I rebuilt is from my '69 which has 3.73s and a 16 tooth driven gear. It is going to be swapped with the one in my '70. If 22 teeth is the max for these driven gears then maybe my '46 with 5.38s will have one with 22. Gonna Check it out.

Nope - the '46 has a 15 tooth :( . Probably not original t-case with the muncie / AA setup

Man, I hate these little details. I don't think my '70 case has ever been rebuilt but I wonder now. My drive gear outta the '70 slid right into the '69 and there is no binding on the ouput cap. The cap is from the '69. The drive gear spins freely inside. My driven gear kinda looks like the one on the left in the rebuild guide. I guess I could pull the seal and put the original 3.73 speedo gearing from the '69 back in.

I had the correct gear combo for the 4.88s. Not sure why the driven gear is messed up. The drive gear is undamaged. Any ideas on who to contact about getting a used 22 tooth gear (sw448495). I would like to use the correct set up for my gearing if possible. Plan B will be the 3.73 gears I have. Thanks for the help.

Has anyone tried to get gears from IH scouts. Didn't they have the D18?

Might try Herm (www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com). Plenty of people have spare dana 18's laying around, convincing them to part with the speedometer gears might not be too hard.
