You guys never cease to amaze me with how you identify engines from a couple bad pics...so without the entire story, I was contact by a local guy who somewhat recently bought a rough and very un-original 1971cj5 Ren II - or something like that. It has some sort later v6 engine and auto TH350 transmission. He did some damage to engine, and needs some parts and is having trouble getting the right stuff - possibly because he doesn't really know what engine it is. His research and block numbers suggest its a Buick 3.8...it kind of looks like one as well with a R2g carb, but seems some of the parts he bought don't fit or are not replacements of what came out. And the oil pan is weird ....maybe its from a front wheel drive application? obviously the oil pan is in conflict with D18 front output, so it doesn't have a front driveshaft. What do you all think it is?

Even fire 231/3.8 , if it's original that carb started about 1980. I can't tell for sure but maybe that's a deeper aftermarket th350 pan.

Looks to be an even fire 231.
Pull the distributor to verify the pickup coil spacing is even.

He needs to get parts quick..... so he can follow you to the Rubicon.

Looks like the 3800 / 231 I have that came out of a 1985 Regal.

the TH350 with front drive shaft . yep I wasn't happy with the fit
    had the same problems
cut 2" off the side of pan and rewelded the inverted L back in
still had to trim a bunch off the casting at yoke
I mean it did work , just wasn't happy with it
also had to run slip joint near axle too

2 piece shafts and support bearings are not uncommon with auto swaps. A la Commando.

Underneath.JPG Every one above is correct. I have one in mine. That's the Tranny pan he's gonna run into. I believe that the way to run these auto's is to cut & & " L " fab the pan, like Ron said. We thought we could get by , with our layout......But the first time I compressed the front end, I wahmmo'd the pan. I still have to do mine , that is why I can't trail much right now Slip yoke has to go up close to the pumpkin. We used a Tom Woods custom shaft.

Yep, thats a 231 in there.
On a TH350 I had years back in a CJ5, I actually cut the side of the transmission case where the pan bolts on, maybe 1/8" or 3/16"? I remember the bolt heads hanging over the edge. Obviously the edge of the pan was cut back too. I made an 1/8" thick backup rail to make sure the pan gasket would seal. I also moved the engine over about 1" by modifying the frame mounts. You also have to use the small diameter u-joints too. Its real tight fitting a driveshaft along side the TH350, but it can be done.
