I bought a 77 Buick HEI distributor Odd fire from NAPA. I know nothing about these distributors. When it came it was just the distributor. Now I need a cap and wires. Do I need a coil or is the coil built into the cap?
Anything else I need. I downloaded the tech piece from Motts so I have learned some.

Coil sets IN the cap, sorry about my original post.

    See this page for illustration.

To avoid confusion, I'm not suggesting buying parts there. I just thought it would give you a good picture of what you're looking for and how the coil and cap go together.

Thanks Sparky. I'm not sure what post your apologizing for but you're obviously forgiven since I don't even remember.
That helped a lot. It looks like I can just take what I have to NAPA and get the rest of the parts I need.
Any hints on how to handle the three wires and the plug. I assume I cut off the plug but which color wire goes where?

I posted that the coil set in the head of the distributor not the cap, I forgot.

I then edited my post to correct. ;)

You can get everything at NAPA.

Three wires and the plug? Don't cut it off. It mounts in the cap. Then just use a spade terminal to plug into it IIRC. This is from memory on MOP's Jeep.

Someone else jump in and correct me if I'm wrong.

yup, the three wires connect to the coil, then a 12v source on a spade goes into the cap right next to where the tach spade would come in.

Just witing on the machine shop at this point. Gathering up the stuff I'm going to need when it is done. I ordered a pressure washer to clean the undercarriage and am wire brushing the surface rust and getting it ready to primer.
I went desert racing this weekend so I lost a couple of days and the old body is pretty sore today so I'm kicking back watching the Nascar race.

Not necessarily. 77 was the changeover year. Consensus is that the OFs were made early in the 77 model year, the EFs came in later in the 77 model year. There were some unique features about the last batch of 77 OFs, discussed recently in another thread...

No, I've learned that much. It has three pointers, not six so I'm OK there I think. I specified Odd fire when I ordered it. It is a remanufactured unit. Anyway I'm taking it to NAPA to match up with cap and coil and will confirm. Thanks for bthe concern.
