So I’m looking up seats for the Jeep and I was really wanting a set of PRPs but those are way out of my price range for now. So for the time being I was thinking about getting either the highback or the lowback poly bucket seats from like Empi or Summit. What is everyone’s experience with these? Are they relatively comfortable with the covers and a little padding added as well? Or is it worth it at all? I’ve heard good and bad but I was thinking they’d be good temporaries. Thanks!!

Probably depends on how cush of a seat you prefer, and how they fit your body. I think the poly seats are fine. But I currently have aluminum low back seats with no padding, and I think those are fine too. So I may not be the best person to ask. 1D385CBA-40A1-4DA6-B479-0326C18F9006.jpeg

They’re fine. They’re actually almost nice when the covers are new. The lumbar ridge is brutal no matter what you do.

I would highly recommend NOT making a cross country trip in them. :contract:

Would adding a little padding in there be an option along with the cover? You speak from experience?

I used to copilot in a flatty that had extra padding in between the seat and cover. It was comfy at first, but after a few minutes of racing, the padding shifted and was like a torture chamber. Maybe better if the padding was glued in place?

I have them in my plow Jeep. They’re great for just scooping the snow out of and not caring if they get wet, but after 20-something years, I think my body is rejecting them. The couple of pressure points that those seats push on have become hyper sensitive. I’ll hopefully be replacing them during the upcoming rebuild.

They were also in the jeep that I rescued and drove cross country in. A few entries from the diary concerning them:

I haven’t checked the prices of them in a long time, but back in the day, the seats were $35 and the covers were $40. There are vendors on eBay that sell brand new seats (search Toyota truck replacement seats) for around $100, and will be a whole lot more comfy. The only selling point of the plastic ones is the ability to hose them off, IMO. But I will say, mine are probably 26 years old by now, and the plastic is still pliable after spending all that time in the elements without a top.

    Good luck!

Another case of expected use. If long trail days are in your future just bite the bullet and get some suspension seats. Your body will thank you.

Whatever you get, spend some time sitting in them before committing.
I have Corbeau Moab seats I got off marketplace cheap. Initially they feel good but after a couple hours I get uncomfortable. The backs/ bolsters are too narrow for my shoulders and come down too low. Hawking marketplace for something else.

Yeah I’ll try and find some used ones for cheap first. The poly seats are sorta last resort

More comfortable than a steel low back seat frame imo.

Those poly seats are ok, however extra padding is a must. kneeling pads like for gardening strategically glued in under the cover can work. As mentioned, probably not suitable for a long road trip. My 2c.

You can see why I gave up on the covers years ago.
