The 67 CJ5 I brought home about a week ago had sat in storage for over 40 years and the engine was stuck.

I put a few ounces of Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder last Saturday and let it sit. This morning I put a wrench on the crankshaft nut and after one good pull was able to turn it over. I rotated it through a couple of full turns, and put some more Marvel in the bores. It is turning fairly easy, but I want the Marvel to do it's thing with the oil rings. I have ordered a carburetor kit and think after rebuilding the carb and freshening the ignition I will get the old gal to run. It only has 33K miles on it, so shouldn't be worn out. I was planning to put a V6 in it, but if I can get the F-Head running good I may use the V6 in one of my other two Jeeps. This one is so unmolested it is almost a shame to not put it back as original.

    I am too!

This Jeep is like a time capsule. It spent a working life as a tender for the used car lot of a big car dealership in Georgia. It had a battery booster set up on it, and a big push bar on front. It was used to jump off and move the used cars around. Only one minor dent on the body, and only two small rust holes one in the cargo bed the other in the bottom of the tool box, otherwise the body is straight and clean.

The paperwork shows it was taken in as a trade in for a 1968 Buick in 1969, so it was pretty new at the time.

It was retired to the storage barn in 1979 and spent all these years there. I bought it from an estate sale and the owner's son said it was parked because it was using oil, he thinks this was because it was often started up and used without warming up. Maybe, but I am hoping it started using oil because of stuck or carboned up oil rings, something I have had good luck correcting with the Marvel Mystery oil many times.

Don't have any pictures yet, other than the one I posted in another thread of how it looked after rolling it off the trailer. If you want to see that it is in a thread called "J.A.S Strikes Again".

I will be taking a bunch of pictures as I start on it and will post a "build" thread. Don't think it will take a lot to get this baby put right. Even the seats are pretty good looking but when I sat in the driver seat the cover was so stiff from age it cracked, so will need new seat covers. Paint is faded, and a little surface rust here and there but really nothing bad.

Like we say in the old engine and tractor world, the good engines stick, the loose ones do not.

What I would do next is get it running without coolant. Yes, it will get hotter than normal, but it will loosen up the rings. I have a steel wheel tractor that was stuck. I got it freed up but it had no compression. After belting it up to my Farmall, I got it to run and once it got hot, the compression came back.

Have heard of running one hot for that, just haven't had the guts to do it. :coffee:

I have had real good results with the Marvel Mystery oil in bringing one back from the dead. I don't know why the stuff works so well but it loosens stuck rings and apparently dissolves carbon build up which is what causes the rings to stick.

I will let it sit with the MM oil for a couple of weeks, go out and turn it every other day, squirt more of it in the bores each time. Then I will turn it with the battery to pump the excess out, drain and refill the crankcase oil.

I have a carburetor kit on the way and ignition tune up kit, will tend to those then will see how it runs.

How long are we talking about running without coolant? I would be scared of cracking a block or something.

I plan to see if the Marvel oil does the trick. I too would be worried about running one without coolant.

Likewise. Last time I checked my compression was in the 90s. Nate, should I assume your technique is for engines with very low compression?

Yes, like I said in my post, that tractor had zero compression from stuck rings. If it has some compression, just running it normally should be enough to boost it. I only ran the tractor for 10-15 minutes. Anymore than that, it would get way too hot I feel. Of course, it is a subjective thing to do. I was constantly monitoring the temp of the cast iron. An f head might be different. I know lots of people do that to old engines and tractors.

The Titan tractor I got from John (duffer) had low compression after reworking the engine. I ran that for a while with water in it and it came back so well that can can barely crank it over without the compression release. I do what is needed on a case by case basis.

That’s why I have rust polisher under my avatar. I’ve learned to read what degree of rust I’m dealing with and the right way to handle it. Give me the biggest ball of rust and I’ll free it up. :sneak:

I had a k5 blazer used a quart every 500 miles for a few years. Then i put mmo in it freed up the rings after a while and went to a quart every 2k. So yeah i wouldnt fuss about too much just keep it in the oil and they might free up over time
