Last night I fired up Putt Putt and pressed in the clutch to put it in gear...

Nuttin... trans just grinds at the RPM of the engine and doesn't slow

linkage was adjusted tight enough that the throw out bearing was tight against the forks

After double checking everything, we ripped trans out to confirm the clutch was in correctly.

    Everything is perfect.

What is wrong? I see Dan had a sticky new clutch before. Is this all that was wrong and just need to break it loose?

Are you *SURE* you have the correct throwout bearing & carrier installed? Did you change anything else in the clutch linkage, such as the cross-shaft, rods, etc? I found that my new Omix-Ada cross-shaft had a different angle to it, such that I used all the adjustment to take up the slack in the clutch linkage with a *new* clutch assembly. I'm going to have to make up some new "shorter" rods so that I can have som eroom to adjust the clutch when stuff starts to wear....

i'll second steve's comment... i had to play around with the cross-sheft and now have too much throw in the clutch.

1:00 AM Trans back in. (posting from the garage via laptop)

    Will start it tomorrow. :coffee:

Nothing changed except friction disc. Will start in gear to see if it will break it loose. Thanks jpflat2a for the phone assistance ;)

Jon I am experiencing the same thing with my V6. When I installed the 231 I put a new clutch disc in it. We got the engine started tried to adjust the clutch but all I get is grinding with the clutch adjusted tight. This weekend I am going to get the transfercase put back in and try it again with a load to see if it breaks loose. I will be watching the board to see how your Jeep does. ;)

    Good luck.

How much clearance to you have between pressure plate (or flywheel) and disc with the clutch depressed? (measure with feeler gauge) that could tell you if you are not getting enough travel to release.

You say the clutch is right so I guess that means the flywheel side of the disc is correct? The bellcrank also has a right and a wrong way it can go on.

Jon, I had similar problems with mine last week. After hosing out the inside of the bellhouse to get rid of mud, it rusted the clutch to the flywheel. Had to do it on 2 different days, but start it in gear and abuse it. Took about 100-200 feet to get mine loose.

12 hours later ---no solution yet.

Started it in gear and held the brake. ran it above idle while holding it back but it wanted to stall. I still couldn't get it out of gear. throw out is adjusted too tight and is spinning with the PP.

It's like I need 3" more clutch pedal

    This is a pisser :(

    Ok, 6:00 report

Clutch is as good as it's going to get. I was able to drive it and shift with some effort. It is getting better. I can hear the disc "scuffing" with the clutch pushed in and it wants to creep away.

gud enuff as the throwout is just a hair off the PP forks. It will get broke in and Tellico for sure

Tacked the spare carrier together and will take it to be PROFESSIONALLY welded Monday by a 220 (or 221 --whatever it takes). :D
