68 Cj5 Holley Super Sniper Tbi 2gc Or Howell Tbi

Hi all just wanted to get some thought back on swapping out the old Rochester 2G carb on my 68 CJ5 225 w/ headers.
just wanted to see if there are any reviews on either the Holley Super Sniper 2G Master Kit or the Howell
#HB225 225 CID Buick TBI Kit? Both kits seem pretty straight forward to install just wanted to get some feedback from the group, then decide which way to go.

I'm just a chef trying to work on my old jeep and make her more of a regular driver and get it ready for some 4wheeling down the road.

 

Searching @Warloch comes to mind I know he's posted experience on 3 or more oddfires and has one he likes.

 

I'd use Howell due to them using commonly available GM parts.

 

Norcal69 just put a Howell on his Dauntless and has a long thread for the whole process: Howell Odd Fire V6 Fuel Injection Kit Install. He seems fairly happy with out after getting it dialed in. No matter what unit you go with, you would likely be better off with a crank sensor to eliminate the odd-fire's uneven tach signal.

Me personally, I lean towards the Holley because it uses a wide-band O2 sensor, is user tunable, has self tuning, and has built in data logging. With the Howell, if it needs tuning, you have to send the chip and a description of your issues back to Howell, or buy additional GM ECU tuning software/hardware to do it yourself.

That said, I haven't heard of anybody on the forum who's used the Holly 2G Sniper yet.

 

I think if you go with the Howell you will need a 4 barrel manifold for the TB.

The Holley Sniper 2 G will work on the 2 barrel manifold no change there. The Sniper will not read the tach signal from the distributor, so you will need to put a crank sensor on to read the RPM.

What ever you use, you will need a HEI distributor.

I am using the FiTech EFI. They say there system will read a HEI tach signal (square wave). Will be a little bit before I get my system up and running.

 

A couple of quick questions....
What don't you like about your 2G?
Is the issue worth the expense of a fuel injection upgrade?
Not trying to dissuade you, just asking if the cost/effort is worth it.

Lots of infor from me and others in the above link. Ironic that I went from 2bl to 4bl intake manifold to then get the 2 barrel Holley Sniper so had to adapt back the other way.

That's a nice looking bit of kit!

 

Not that it's the same application... but I did a 2bbl Sniper install on a Wagoneer with an AMC 360 and it has worked beautifully from day 1. No complaints whatsoever.

 

@Steve's 70-5 what FiTech did you end up with?

I am about to dive into putting a Holley Sniper EFI on my freshly rebuilt 1966 Dauntless, I will start a thread when I get going on it in a few weeks.

I would love this kit if someone actually put it on and it worked fine. Holley told me a year or so ago they weren’t sure it would work on an odd fire engine. These guys say it does if you use an HEI for tach signal. Is this the kit your using?

 

That is the one I am looking at, but I realize I will need an RPM signal from either the (-) on the coil or from a separate ignition box, at least that's what I was told when I spoke with Holley this am. They do not offer a Sniper HEI for the Buick V6 oddfire. So I am also looking at what options would work for that - anyone else gone down this road?

 

Does the HEI distributor make an even tach signal?

 

For my education with no intention of going EFI, what is involved with installing a 'crank trigger' or 'crank sensor'?

 

I will have a chance at beer o’clock today to have a good detailed conversation about these issues with a mechanic friend who has done EFIs into late 60s engines before and will report back later

 

No, but the thing is Holley admitted to me that they had actually never tried this on an odd fire engine so they told anyone that asked no, just cause they never tried it.

 

I'm trying to learn about this too. I *think* that one would have to CNC machine a ferrous-steel toothed disc that attaches to the outside of the harmonic balancer/pulley and then mount something like this somewhere where the sensor tip would be 0.040" from the toothed disc.

Question for those who have balanced a crank before (I have not) - wouldn't adding such a toothed disk need to be done at time of engine assembly in order for proper balancing?
