I did use assembly lube, I did prime it, and I "thought" it had plenty with the drill. When I fired it, it was low, so I stopped. First went to the oil pump check spring, which was wrong. The oil pump comes with 2 different sets of springs of different colors, for the 2 different oil pump housings. I had the wrong spring in, (and I am paying for it now). So I changed it, and it went to 40 lbs, so I ran it to break in the cam. But as that went on, it developed valve train noise on the left side, which made me think cam bearing, because the left side oil to the top comes from the front cam bearing. The front cam bearing has pretty bad wear, but not enough to block flow to the head, so I'm not sure why the noise, but at this point with it all the way down, change all bearings.

Scott, the solution is for me to pull my head out, retroactively. Yes, run the prime with the valve covers off, be sure about the pressure, new parts obviously.

The head oiling issue could be caused by the rocker shaft being installed in the wrong orientation.

Just catching up on this Tim, dang I feel for you having to backtrack. Hope you can get it back together and running soon.

Also I will be eagerly following your roll cage build. I have delusions of trying the same thing, we have a hydraulic bender at the makerspace but no one really knows how to use it so I was going to try and learn by making a roll cage this summer.

As soon as the wheels arrive, I can get it on a trailer and to Sam's for a day for the bending. He did the cage for his Commando, so between the 2 of us, I'm sure we can screw something up!

I have 4 33x10.5" R15 wheels you can borrow....just got them swapped off Thursday and they're just sitting out in a carport.

Thanks very much Grant, but the 15's won't fit over the Chevy disc brakes. It's a shame, because I have a set of Terra Tires mounted on 15's that now won't go on either jeep.

Really? The wheels I have have 3.75" backspacing and fit over the front disc brake kit I put on (did grind the calipers though).

I just know the 15" spokers that have my terras on them don't fit. They are probably 3.75 BS also. Your disc brakes, are they on a 27 or 30? Like Sam's kit? Anyway I can wait a few weeks for the wheels. Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it.

Well, I'll be a SOB. Fireball for the win! I had seen this sometime in the past, but was worth a re-look. A quick trip to the garage and yes, the shafts are in backwards. Fireball, I owe you a beer or 3. This photo in the manual is the key.

This is the left head off the bone stock motor I am parting out. Same orientation of the notch and cotter pin.

This is the left head off the tux. Backwards.
And it's not that they just got put on the wrong side, they were assembled wrong, with the shaft in reversed, end for end. So, a quick reassemble, with careful attention paid.
Back on to the heads, with plenty of assembly lube, the little notch, (finger pointing), that's the key.

OK, I have been open about my screwups, and I appreciate the positive input here. It does really help. But, this was not me, it had to be whoever assembled the heads, 2005-ish. Could have been the machine shop, could have been my dad. In their defense, the notches are really small.

I'm glad I could help! It's nice to have a concrete root cause.

On to some more enjoyable tasks. With the unseasonably warm temperatures, I decided to paint the floors so the gas tank can go in for the last time. Sierra Blue 222:
Then bead blasted the tunnel cover, and the bucket seat brackets that I got from a member here, as I am not using the 60-40 seats. Painted everything, as well as the tank.

That got me thinking about seats.

Main bearings came today, so I took an hour after I got home to check the bearing clearances with plastigage, install a new rear main seal, and install the crank. Used liberal amounts of assembly lube, torqued the caps down to 95 lbs. The rod bearings are coming Friday, and if that happens, I want to get this thing back together quickly.

Today I was informed that the wheels are now pushed to a Jan 21 delivery date. So, looking at options for moving the jeep. I had been discussing with truckee4x4 as to what fits over these brake calipers, today I checked. A 15" wheel off my Bantam trailer fits over the small rear Ford brakes, so that works. And a 16" does fit over the front Chevy brakes. I have a few sketchy 16" rollers from the Surplus Tire Accumulation Dept. that should work enough to get it on and off the trailer for the cage build.

Reassembled the motor most of the way today, all bearings checked for clearance, torqued, and assembled. Re-primed the oil pump, dumped some break-in oil in it, and gave it a spin with the drill. 30 lbs pressure, and plenty of oil getting to the top end. I think I'm good to go.

Nice! Glad you worked this out. I ended up selling my tires and wheels this weekend to a nice guy from Stockton who came up and bought them for his J2000 truck.

Edit - PS - what black paint did you use for the tunnel cover? Looks great!
