I was wondering this as well...I don't know the 231 with HEI specs, but with the 225, the FSM spec for initial timing is 5 advanced....most of us push that number higher, especially those of us at elevation, but even then, I am only running 9-10 initial advance....I start getting pinging when I set it to 12....the max you can push your initial timing is dependent on a number of things (like cam, elevation etc), but for working out the kinks in the carb under acceleration, I would set that by the book and remove that as a possible issue...you can push the initial timing up after everything else is working.....

The Balancer I was referring to was a suggestion by a member earlier . I have no idea what lies below the distributor cap . Great advise on the book, I had hoped I could pay someone to fix it and avoid the time loss while attempting to venture into the unknown.
So the stamp on the carburetor said 2007. That’s also the date the artist put on the paint job. Since the gauges were also done at that time I’m assuming
The odometer might indicate the miles driven ( around 4K) since the build . It’s been a interesting and fun puzzle ! Without the help of this group I would no doubt be in the dark still.
    Thanks again for your help!

Previous post refers to the "harmonic balancer" on the nose of the crankshaft, behind the crankshaft pulley. The timing marks are there, and the pointer is on the timing chain cover. That's all it has to do with timing.

Is the vacuum advance on this dist adjustable as in sticking an allen tool into the vacuum inlet and adjusting the vacuum diaphragm spring tension?

This is an adjustable vacuum canister -

    [IMG] SUM-850313_ml.jpg

Notice the orifice is inline with the advance arm, and the can has a hex to turn against. The offset nipple like you have keeps the vacuum nipple out of the fan belts, but it can't provide this adjustable access. With the adjustable can, you can tighten or loosen a screw through the hole in the nipple. There is something inside the can that makes more or less tension on the vacuum diaphragm, and provides some adjustment.

Some progress, I replaced the power valve from the 6.5 to the suggested 9.5 from the tech at holley. He said to check the idle vacuum (19) and devide it x 2.
The Jeep now runs much better but it still has a smaller stumble is up around 3200 . Originally it was at 2200 and much longer . So after another tech call I’m looking at the squirter.
I can see a number on it from above but my eye sight can’t make it out so I will have my son read it today .
    The tech suggested my altitude being 3-4 k I should have a # 35 squirter .

Final discovery on my engine stumble on my 231 Buick with Holley avenger 470 carburetor . while changing jets and inspecting the throttle plates we accidentally discovered the throttle shafts were worn and that created big vaccine leaks! I had sprayed the area with carburetor cleaner in the past and did not notice a jump in the rpms and the carburetor looked new so I did not find the vacuum leaks. Apparently the new carb cleaners are not as flammable as they were before epa restrictions.
I bought an edelbrock and it worked great out of the box!!!
That was the main issue I had been chasing! Also while taking the distributor off to get the heads off easier we discovered the counter weights were stuck from rust internally as well! It also appeared to new.
So three mechanics and with the help of a fourth we finally found my issues and my Jeep is running fantastic!!! Thanks all who posted and helped .

It's funny , I was going to pipe up and say this , glad I read the whole thread. This has fixed all of my holley issues in the past.
