Got the exhaust hooked up and just waiting for the brakes to be bleed, so i decide lets start the jeep and hear it again. I start it after it starts there is a terrible griniding sound. Seems to be the starter sticking out. I know my starter is kind of oily and dirty, but this has never happened before. I didnt remove the starter when i put the tranny back in, nor did i disturb the flywheel. Is the starter drive softer metal than the flywheel?? I checked the fork and it is fine and on the pivot stud, and the fork is on throw out bearing.I put the tranny cover back on with the tranny the correct way. Would a starter stick out just for the heck of it?? like i said, this never has happened before, but it really seems to be the starter, how can i make sure checking myself??

I'd say you have no choice but to pull it out and check it.

I can't imagine it being heavier than an F-head starter. They are definitely heavy. Are you saying it sounds like it's still trying to engage after starting? Maybe stuck solenoid? You said it's dirty, you'd better check it before you're trying to start it on some hill in Tennessee. ;)

You can hear something just rattling like it is on a gear or something. It is a nasty noise but you can defiantely tell it is a gear of some sort or something with teeth that is dragging across. i was reading online bout starters doing this and they all seems to go away after a while, given i do not leave the motor on long enoguh to see if it goes away i do not need to get any teeth knocked off the flywheel

Nope the shims are there, it worked just fine before i put the jeep in the garage and started to do the axle swap. nothing was changed to the starter. Only thing was done near it was to take the tranny out and reinstall it.So it is something with teeth grinding. Either flywheel or the tranny :( I just pulled the starter and there were no real marks on it. the ends of the starter gear are eaten at a bit, but i cant tell if it was fresh or not. I didnt see any shavings, and i do not remember if the starter had the gear replaced when i got it (rebuilt) from a local FLAPS. I got the starter to spin over jsut fine with a screw driver jumping the switch. It didnt stick open, and i excersiczed it enoguh that it looked fine. given i am not sure about the force it is putting out, or if it will stick only when the botled to the motor. So tomorrow i am going to swap out the starter (lifetime warrenty) and try it again. if it is not the starter i am going to think the worse. But i didnt touch the tranny at all. Only possible thing i can think of is a tool fell insode the tranny, but i had it covered with rags the whole time. But once again the sound is defiante like teeth being rubbed against. Really did sound like the flywheel becuase it seem to be a differnt sound since it is a larger gear, but then what do i know. But i will continue this tomorrow. Good thing of the day is that i didnt need a new muffler, mine fit fine when i ****ed it a bit to clear the Tcase :) But this is going to bug me, because i do nto want to pull the tranny again :(
