Got to looking at the mounting for the winch. I welded on a piece of angle iron on the passenger side, like i had when i originally mounted the winch. On the driver side i have to deal with the saginaw mount. So i took 2 pieces of angle iron. One goes across the top of the frame and points up. the other piece of it is welded so the flat part is where the winch mount bolts to, and the bottom part is notched to clear the saginaw mount and the other un notched part will be welded to the inside of the frame rail that is boxed. Just wondering before i go any further if this is acceptable. The passenger side is fine, just curios if i will have enoguh support if i do the drive side this way?

Dan I would take it across the top then have metal run down the side of the frame on the outside. Cut out for steering box bolts 1/4 will be adequate. You then run bolts down from the top and through the side. It will also provide extra strenghth along the front frame rails that can develope a bow from continued or heavy winching.

HHHMMM.. not sure bout getting the metal to go down the outside. with the outboard bracket there and the steering bolts. not much metal will be there if i cutout all the steering bolt heads, but i do understand what you are saying. It will be fully welded on top, and welded on the inside frame rail. Where exactly is the msot stress going to be put on the mount when winching? Is it going to be an upwards motion, or straight forward motion when the winch is being used??

I mentioned all that because You seem to be building a heavy duty rig. My CJ5 I built my mount like that but I also have an upright winch on it(8274) forces may not be so severe witha lay down like a REP8000 or something like that. I know how many early cj's I have bought that the po just welded a piece of 1/4 plate across the frame rails to mount the winch that there were cracks or it was bowed up right before the front crossmember. I had to find another frame for my 48 2A because of that. Really it may be overkill but you might give some thought.

I have an old bellview so it will work like your winch. I was thinknig maybe also add the steel tubing to across the frame rails behind the tabs and weld the tabs also to the square tubing. This should give it more rigidity. I am tying to picture the frame rails bowing out.

Not bowing out bowing up or arching it up or down, Sorry if I wasn't more clear. Seems the force from the winch can bow the front frame horns up the frame can flex up and down and can bend the frame or crack it over time from flex. Kinda like what happens to them when they have had a snow plow on them all their lives. Like I said it may be overkill. I know I've a couple of them that had winches on them that were like that. probablly not as severe if you've boxed the frame rails for a saginaw conversion, I'm just thinking out loud now, might be overkill. but I think it'd be worth watching.

Thanks David!!! I understand now. I cant say i will use the winch that much, i think the only time i have used it is to pull stumps out from the backyard. ;) I am not all that worried about the frame, i do have to repalce it sometime in the future, i have repaired many cracks in it.

    Thanks
