steering

    im sure this has been posted on here before but i am i new member, what all do i have to do to tighten up the steering on a 67 cj5, this jeep was used daily on tours at a local attraction and now it is really road crazy. any solutions?

    Welcome, bnrboy. :)

    There are many possibilities. The solution lies in the area where the most "give", or "slop" is, or perhaps a combination of multiple areas. Best bet: have a willing soul turn the steering wheel (w/ engine off) back and forth whilst you peer down the engine compartment to see where the steering "slop" may be. Visually inspect the linkage from steering column to the wheels. Note the area(s) where linkage closest to the steering wheel moves and futher linkage doesn't. A frequent culprit is the draglink, which is a long rod parallel to the left frame...both those end-joints are notorious for wear (and rebuild kits are available, easy, and cheap). Anyway, pinpoint the area(s) of the most slop--where the steering wheel moves and the linkage doesn't. Do that and report back. Good luck!

    If you still have the Ross brand of steering, the bellcrank is also a major wearing point.
