Ok, while screaming around my nice suburban circle under the cover of darkness I realized tht I have a significant growl from the xfrcase area when in high gear. Sounds like a gear growl, or mebbe an xfercase gear that is bad. And it is only evident in high gear, under light load.

I am running a T-90 / 29-tooth D-18 combo with a Husky overdrive of unknown history. Is this the sound of a worn-out OD assembly?
If so, I'm going to put the old bullgear back in and yank the OD before Tellico.

Idears guys? I'm completely clueless when it comes to overdrives... :(

Steve, I think if it were me I would try and isolate the problem area a little better.
I assume this is not the "normal" D18 howl that the D18 can make feathering the throttle, not on the gas or all the way off the gas. Did you shift the overdrive in/out? Does it make the noise regardless of OD in/out?
That being said, let's try this: high gear noise (to me) seems to indicate trans frt bearing, main drive gear/ cluster area. But before we jump to conclusions,
shift the D18 into neutral; now run through all the gears including the overdrive.
This is going to work them all and eliminate the rear output, driveshaft, rear end etc, because they are not turning.
Do you still hear the noise/growling?
run the engine up in RPMs while doing this; you're trying to simulate driving here.
BE CAREFUL, BLOCK THE WHEELS, MAKE SURE T/CASE IS IN NEUTRAL
then we have all the "other" possibilities:
    exhaust hitting the frame
    motor mounts/trans-t/case mount
    crossmember bolts tight
    u/joints/driveshaft
    oil in t/case/transmission
    angle of driveshaft
    OD gear nut tight
    OD linkage not hitting/rubbing body
    trans lever-t/case lever(s) not rubbing/hitting body
it's late, all I can think of for now

What's the history of the t-case? Don't forget the intermediate shaft being notorious for wear.

This tranny/transfer case combo came out of a mid-fifties wagon, I think. This was an interim solution, and was sold to me in 'running' condition. I found it interesting that the D-18 didn't have a parking brake setup on the output, so I had to swap tail housings over.

I think what I'm hearing is the growl/whine that Jim mentioned, since it is only apparent on light throttle conditions.

I'm planning on doing a complete rebuild of the T-90 / D-18 this coming winter, I just hope it hangs in there until then. I'd rebuild the one that came out of the '2A except that it was full of ATF instead of 90wt. and everything in there is totally shot now. No telling how long it was run that way...

If it goes away on compression and on throttle it may be rear driveline angle or worn u joint. I had a similar noise that appeared between compression and throttle. I had a CV rear shaft made and it went away. Just a thought.
