I have a 225 delco distributor in a 66 Tux and went to put pertronix in this weekend.I pulled the distributor and this is what the shaft and gear look like.Is it safe to run if I clean up the distributor drive shaft?I also set the engine to tdc and the distributor was 180 out rotor was pointing at #4 instead of #1. 20200721_190402.jpg 20200721_190606.jpg

I think you're done with that distributor.
Don't forget the drive gear down inside the timing cover.
You could either be missing the camshaft thrust button and spring inside the timing cover and on the end of the camshaft or I've heard talk of the higher pressure/higher volume oil pump gears/spring putting strain on the distributor drive/driven gears.
The drive gear on the camshaft turns the distributor driven gear; the distributor shaft turns the oil pump shaft.
    So this is all related.
Either way, just replacing what you hold in your hand isn't going to solve the problem.
I think you're going to have to remove the timing cover and take a look.
    That's my opinion anyways.

:pickme: What he said - no way I'd try to run that without pulling the timing cover. You could be close to or over some serious damage in there.

yeah that's what I figured. it's weird it was running that seem good just pulled the distributor to install the pertronix. I wasn't going to pull it but I'm kinda glad I did hope it's not damaged to bad.So while I'm in there what all should I replace? Thanks

Yep, if it's like my Jeep I kept the steering wheel and seems like I've replaced everything else :(

Pulled the timing cover today. Chain looks pretty loose it was missing one of the tensioners.looks like the bolt was broken off by whoever changed the the timing chain before me.Do I try to remove the broken bolt or just get a timing chain that doesn't need tensioners? And does my cam gear look worn?Should I replace it while I'm in there?
