    Hello all,

As i am replacing my aftermarket electric fuel pump from the PO, i noticed there was a difference in hose size. Ive looked around but i dont seem to find which hose size is considered "Proper" for the 198 motor. Anyone know if it should be 5/16 or 3/8? Does it really matter much?

Seems as though they make both sizes for pumps but also that the nipples are exchangeable so wondering why the big difference?

    https://airtexasc.com/media/1178/16-universal-fuel-pump-applications.pdf

I bought a E8090 but noticed the one i took out is a E8012S. The only thing i can see is the hose size.

Also, there reason i am replacing the pump is that it does not stay on constantly. It shuts on and off so the engine dies. Maybe its overheating, getting old, who knows. So i am going to replace all old fuel lines, filter as well. Just want to do it all with correct sizes.

Mine is 5/16 and works great.

I would probably use the same size as your fuel filter and carburetor inlet so everything is the same.

regarding the old pump shutting off... mine would randomly do that and it turned out to be bad wiring. I think there was a break inside the insulation of one of the wires so it would occasionally get jostled and cut off the power. I redid the wiring and it’s been 100% ever since.

Yeah, I would have guessed 5/16" ID. GM went to 3/8" with the big V8s, but a 198 would not warrant that. E8012S looks fine if you like that brand. E8016S would also be fine. I would check the Buick TSM to see what fuel pressure your engine calls for. Ca 3psi is probably fine.

    More Information for CARTER M3643
This is the pump for a '63 Buick Special with a 198. 6.5psi. So E8012E looks like the ticket.

Thanks. I do have a original tune up spec sheet and it states 4-5 1/4 PSI at Carb inlet from Idle to 1500 RPM. 1/2 PSI higher at fuel pump. Since this pump goes up to 9 PSI is there any concern with too much pressure that would warrant adding a regulator?

9 PSI is too much for a carb

You don't need a lot of pressure with a carburetor. It will run fine from a gas can on the cowl, siphoning down to the float bowl. My BOTEC says that's a fraction of a PSI.

My '67 225 V6 originally had a 5/16" fuel line incoming from the gas tank, and a 1/4" return line.

I was considering adding a return line, but since that was not already in place i would have to research a way.

Mine still has the OEM type filter with the larger 5/16" fuel line exiting from the center and the smaller 1/4" return line adjacent to it:

I can get the filter part number for you if you need it.

From the top of the filter, the return line makes a u-turn and travels downward along the front of the motor, then turns 90 degrees toward the rear, hanging just below the oil pan bolts on the driver's side of the engine. From there it works its way back along the frame, then turns upwards through a hole in the floor between the side of the tub and the gas tank and attaches to a fitting on top of the tank.
