I'm looking to order on line parts for my "project". I bought it 69 CJ not running and told it had dropped a cylinder. I have one head off the other side today. So far the bottom end looks OK. I'm planning on: cam, lifters timing chain and sprokets, coil, and gasket set. Have the heads rebuilt locally.
Any ideas who would have the best stock of online parts?
    Thanks,
    Gregg

got my rebuild parts @ flaps. i recommend the comp cam kit (sk63-234-4) comes w/cam, timing gears/chain, lifters, assembly grease and destructions. was about 4 bills though.

Thanks, I'm new here and I found that part of earlyCJ5 after I posted the question. However I have more; is the Mallory dual point distributor the only one that will work with the Odd Fire? It says the "only" aftermarket. I'm not building a hotrod just a nice driver.

    You need a new distributor?

Or you have a Mallory dual point?

Most folks here would agree go with the GM HEI. Plenty of info on that here. Or even the Pertronix keeping your same distributor but retrofitting it to be an electronic ignition. Plenty of good info on that here too. ;)

I run the Mallory dual point, I have had it for about 10 years now , for a point type distributor it works great. However most guys use a GM HEI off of a 75-77 oddfire 231 buick v6, the Pertronix ignitor (drop in electronic unit) can be fit into the Delco pointed distributor, however it does not fit the Prestolite distributor, the Prestolite does not have the little window to adjust the points on it like the Delco unit does. For timing chains I recommend a good quality roller set and you should put a mellings hi-volume oil pump in it while you have the timing cover off, the oiling system is Buicks big weakness and this kit is a big help.;)

Thank you, that is all good information. The motor had a distributor in it but I think someone was trying to get it to run right and just stuck in one. I don't know how to tell if it is an odd fire or not so I was going to get another one that I knew was right to be sure. This is a GM dist but the lobes that open the points are very strange. It has peak lobes and platue lobes. I've never seen anything like it before but I've never seen anything from an odd fire. Does the odd fire need a special coil?

I'm sorry to sound dumb but on this engine I am. I want to make sure I'm getting it. When I turn the distributor the points open 6 times. Are you saying they should only open 3 times ?? Is the pick up you're refering to the lobes or something else?

    They better open 6 times, it's a 6 cylinder! ;)

Look at the page I directed you to. A picture is worth a thousand words.

I'm gonna guess though that since it's points you've nothing to worry about.

Can't recall an EF V6 w/ points at all. They were phased out for HEI by the late 70's when the EF V6 came along.

I looked at the picture. Are you talking about the one grinding off the pointers? If so I'm not sure inmy application that would matter, that is an electronic ignition right?
Thanks for your patience on this. I'm good on motors but not electronics.
To make sure we're on the same page. I want to stay with points for now. I just want to make sure this is an odd fire distributer. What exactly am I looking at to tell the difference?

An oddfire pointed distributor, will have lobes and plateaus as you described. You really need to go to this page http://home.off-road.com/~merls_garage/oddfire.html and read up to understand what and oddfire motor is, they are very special and it has nothing to do with the firing order. By the way the pointed distributor on merles page is a Delco unit and not a Prestolite.

An electronic distributor (HEI) types has 3 points to the stator and the electronic module does the rest.
Please fill out your profile so we know where you hail from.
If all else fails post a pic if you can for the distributor, also describe what it looks like in detail!

I forgot about Merl's page, it's in the V6 resources section though.

As I said, Mcruff, wouldn't you agree, if it's points it's 99% likely to be an OF distributor? I can't recall an EF points V6 distributor.
