Well i just got it buttoned up pending torquing down the bearing caps in the pumkin. It took a while but i defeated the front axle for now. Mission was to swap out gears. So i started after lunch and now finished. I had the worst time with the spindles like most people. Went to harbor freight and got a 3 lb. rubber shot mallet. The driver side spindle came off pretty easy. The passenger side gave me a serious workout. Felt like John Henry afterwards. After about 15 minutes of pounding it broke free and the mallet was totally chewed up. Got the axles out, the carrier came out real easy, as did the front pinion. Slapped the other gears in (didnt shim or set anything because they are sacrifial) and put everything back together.

My question now is what is the torque value for the bearing cap bolts?? They are not marked on the head as to what grade they are, so I am not sure. They are 1/2 inch fine thread. Once i get them torqued down , then i fill it up with so oil and probably watch the oil leaks begin, but no worry, i will go back into it in the summer when i regear it all.

    Thanks!!!

I know the rear axle bearing caps are 60 ft lbs, the front ones should be the same.

Just a thought.....Many years ago I built a simple spindle puller. Welded an old spindle wrench to a spindle nut. Welded a nut to the top where the rachet fit. ran a long bolt through the nut. Simply spin the puller on the spindle and run the bolt in with a ratchet or impact wrench. Once in a while you will get badly stuck one(usualy a later model open knuckle). Run the bolt in until you feel it won't take any more and smack the bolt head with a two LB hand sledge. I used it for many years and it never failed to pull a spindle.

If you didn't set the gears properly, why torque them to spec?? In other words, I understand they aren't going to be in there forever, so you didn't shim them, so why not just get the bearing caps gud'n'tite..........
