My CJ is well over due for a new exhaust system as the one now is rusty junk. The engine is a freshly fully overhauled stock F-134, Pertronix, holly 1 barrel carb.

I’m considering moving up to a Webber 2 barrel at some point, along with headers. Maybe to squeak out a little more performance. It would be nice to have an exhaust system that would allow me to grow. I’m NOT looking at hot-rod, as I know that’s a waste of effort.

Would an exhaust shop 2.25” high flow exhaust and muffler system be acceptable both now, and still allow me to make a few modifications to accept headers should I go for a little more flow from something like a 2 barrel Weber?

or should I just stay stock and get an exhaust from Kaiser/Walcks and leave it be.

I had a muffler shop put a 2" system on mine, kept the stock manifold. 2" seemed to have made a tiny bit of difference but not enough to matter as far as I could tell. Main reason I had it done was to get the routing as I wanted it to be.

    Interesting.

I hadn’t even thought of routing. :banghead:

The problem with a big pipe on a f4 is keeping the exhaust velocity up for scavenging.

    This.
Without head work/porting, a free flowing exhaust isn’t helpful.

The guy that did mine didn't really want to go with 2" due to rigidity. The bigger the pipe the less flex it has and the hangers can only give a certain amount. He wanted me to stay with the stock size but I convinced him I wasn't going to get too rough with it.

Bottom line is staying stock size would probably be the best choice.

The engine is actually getting overhauled right now by Jimmy Strauss. They talked me out of a Webber (too much carb), but I need adjustability as I’m at altitude, so they recommend the Holly. Unfortunately I was just notified today it will require a lot of linkage, and modification of the manifold and machining of a block, so we’re going to stick with the Solex for now.

    it’s never easy

The engine is currently being overhauled now. Jimmy Strauss is trying to get the Holly to work, but linkage has to be made. He’s leaning towards just using the Solex that came on it.

I’ll find out what Holly this week. And if it will work. We may skip it

I put a standard exhaust from KW on mine and like it . Had a solex for 10 yrs and it started acting up, so I put the original YF back
on after I rebuilt it. I like it much better.

I had a Holley 1940 (ford falcon i6 sound right?) on my 134 when I pulled it. It would run the highway better and did pretty well offroad with the wishbone float bowl but the carter yf did get 16mpg. Anyway I might have some pics if I can find them. The 2" carb spacer was the biggest challenge
