Hey everyone i just picked up a 59 cj5 4cyl runs and stops ok but wont go into reverse. Clutch is fine and not dragging. The stick simply wont move forward to reverse. Ami i missing something? There a lockout lever or cable?

Search yielded lots of reverselight threads is all.
    Pics coming soon.

It is a straight cut gear. Did you try slipping the clutch to get it to go in?

There is an arm inside the transmission to slide the reverse idler gear in. It might not be aligned properly in the shift rail. You could take the top off the transmission and take a peek in there.

Kinda like a sm420? If i had to guess it feels like an alignment thing it wont even move in the slot like it has a lock out

Looks like a T90, but it’s hard to tell. Yes, like an sm420.

[IMG] Update got the top off. It looks as though the rod is in bacwards on the shift top.. Trans had water in it so it will be getting flushed and refilled.

Considered the gold standard for rebuilding-

    T90 Rebuild Guide

    There's accompanying videos on youtube.

Do you have a factory service manual?

There's not much for these things that isn't available, some of it is of questionable quality but it's out there.

Water is not uncommon in these things. Drain the transfer case and refill as well. If there's water in the trans, there's most likely water in the transfer case as well. I'd probably do it again after putting some miles on the new fluid and consider the first round to be a flush.

Things might just work a lot better with new oil in there.

I would put some diesel or heating oil in it and drive around a parking lot. You would not believe the gunk that comes out. I do that every time after I get water in my diffs and transmission.

Be sure to refill with mineral oil so the yellow metals don't get dissolved by the sulfur in regular gear oil.

[IMG] Refilled with gl4 oil said its for manual trans. Going to run it a short time do your heating oil suggestion
Then fill with sta-lube from napa.

Figured out reverse issue someone put the brass fitting too far down and the shift rod wouldnt move. Imgur

I had water in my 4 gear transmission and it rusted, so I had to pay for new parts (and a pro work). In exchange I had a 5 years warranty ... It still works very well, I like driving my Jeep.(y)

Why would any body put that kind of fitting in a transmission? Doesn't even relate?

What do you suppose the PO was attempting to do with that fitting?
