A strange project has brought about a strange problem... I'm in the process of doing a Hudson steering swap on my Jeep and am running into issues where nothing seems to fit correctly and the steering is hitting the oil pump. After questioning everything and lots of yelling, I need to know how many variations of F head oil pumps there are and which is the lowest-profile option.

Here is the pump I am working with that may be causing clearance issues:

    oil pump.jpg

It has a bulge on the end of it and the protrusion from the engine casting to the flat plate is shown...

    oil pump 2.jpg

If you have an oil pump that looks different than this, or has a different depth from the engine mount can you please let me know and take a quick picture with the measurements?

    Second round of questions:

    1) I have heard from other forums that L head and F head oil pumps are interchangeable so long as they are both gear driven. What is the difference?
    2) Any difference in civilian and military pumps?

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many different oil pumps. Both of my motors have a flat bottom, is that a pressure bypass valve on the bottom? The one shown looks like a better made pump, with that casting on the bottom. :watch:

Many years back, I had another variation that was an all aluminum pump housing. I don't remember which variation it was.
Wow, You're going old-school! Where do you source a Hudson steering box? I worked on a CJ with that conversion decades ago. Hudson used a different version of a Ross box?

What you need is the '52 and later Hudson steering gear, with the narrower gear casting. The '51 and earlier won't work for this application.

(Just kidding - I know nothing specific about this conversion.)

Show us your Hudson parts! That's much more interesting than the oil pump issue, which I'm sure you'll figure out.

I hope durangotang doesn't mind me jumping in here...
I sold him the Hudson box, it came on a parts Jeep I bought back in the mid 90's. This thing was a real mutt, it started out as a 64 Tux, but had an M38A1 tub, and a poorly adapted v6 that had been mounted several inches to the right to clear this Hudson box. It is in fact a Ross box but is considerably larger than the Jeep unit and i remember reading somewhere that they use roller bearings instead of bushings. I tried to fit it in my 70 CJ but it won't fit with the v6 in the stock location.
The front clip, 11" brakes, one piece tie rod, and T90/D18/OD from that Jeep are currently in my 70 CJ.

Don't mind at all. I forgot that you said they moved the engine over to clear it. ANyone who wants to follow the Hudson swap, it's in my build thread. My Little "Barn" Find... '55 CJ5

So the seller of the pump with the EI casting sent me this... somehow it's actually larger than the one I have... [IMG]
