How do I get the tapered bearing off the output shaft? This is the only thing I have not completely disassembled and it drove me crazy for about 45 minutes already.

Tap it off with a rubber mallet or press it off.
Mine came off with a rubber mallet, some are on tight enough that you have to press them off.

I beat it with a rubber mallet with no success. I guess I need to take it somewhere to press it off. Should I go to a machine shop or my regular mechanic?

We (Mike Oakes and I) put the output shaft between a couple blocks of wood - seating the bearing on the wood - and beat the loving @#$%#$% out of the output shaft end with a Brass hammer.

We did three this way...one popped off pretty quick. On another t-case the bearing had kinda welded itself to the shaft...it took us literally 40-50 minutes of pounding, taking turns.

Mike Oakes new brass hammer was a mushroom by the time we got done.

Well, problem solved. I went by Auto Zone and used a three-jawed puller (same one I used for pulling the parking brake). Very minimal effort and free. It came off with so little force it was not even funny. That is three times in the past two weeks that auto zone has saved me money and frustration:

    1) free impact wrench
    2) free puller
    3) free puller

I should mention that it helps that Napa, Auto Zone, and Oreilly Auto are all within 1 mile of my house.
