This little dude does not like speeds over 55 - 60. What is a safe speed I can cruise this dude at without engine damage?

I currently drive it ten miles to a bus stop with speed at 55 mph for about 5 minutes. Does anyone see problems with this?

I am guessing that 55 mph is about 2500 - 2600 rpm from a chart I got from the internet.

    specs: 4.27 gearing, 3 spd, 134 cui.

Measure the height of your tires. Any height over 27" should be ok at 55, I'd think.

A lot of the problem is the aerodynamics and low power-to-weight ratio. Not much left at that speed, even with the best possible choice of gear ratios.

Good. Honestly, I am shocked that folks would want to drive these short CJ-5s any faster than 55 - 60. They seem to be a little squirely after 55. My brother has a 78 CJ-5 (wheelbase is a little longer than mine and has a 6cyl) and he keeps his below 60.

Without an overdrive I'd say 55 is the absolute top end for it. With an overdrive about 65 is all you can do on level ground!

Re top speed, if your rig is squirrelly @ 50 or so, you need to look it over closely - tires/wheels, steering gear, etc. I run mine at 65-70, with no worries, wobbles, etc. - but I'm running essentially a new '59 CJ5 - everything has been rebuilt or is new.

    FWIW-

I used to be able to run my 52 M38A1 at around 50MPH with 5.38's and 31" tires... i don't get much above 25mph now. But at 50mph with the ross box steering can get a little fun!!

This is my first jeep so I am not used to this short of a wheelbase. I have driven quite a few CJ7s which seeem 'not as squirrelly' on the road at highway speeds. I guess I needed to clarify 'squirrely' driving.

I drive a Hemi Ram 4 door with 20" tires which will cruise at 90 mph effortlessly. My jeep is half as long and weighs less than 1/2 the truck which would not drive as stable as what I normally drive on the highway...

The jeep is a toy that I purchased to replace a Ploaris Sportsman 500 4 wheeler. It is a great part-time driver offering me efficient transportation back and forth to the park and ride (bus), around town errunds and off roading fun (that hauls four instead of one on the 4 wheeler)..
