    I have a 1964 CJ-5 with a 4 cyl, 3 speed, 4.27 geers and a twin stick transfer case.

I have been told to remove the rear drive shaft when towing behind my truck (Jeep will NOT cruise at 70 mph to the deer lease).

Is this necessary to do for towing? It s a pain to remove but worth doing if it will damage the tranny or transfer case.

There's been a lot of discussion about this in the past. If you want to read the controversy, you can search the archives. IMO the safest course is to remove the driveshaft if you are going more than 10-20 miles.

    X's 2...

I remove remove the rear D/S from the axle and bungee it to the frame. 4 bolts = 10 minutes at most = not worth worrying about leaving it attached.

Does anyone know what's the difference in the wear of a vehicle while towing versus just driving? I never figured that one out.

I figure better safe than sorry, I always disconnect the drive shaft, again 10 minutes = peace of mind. I can now connect/dis connect in the dark.
    Just one person's opinion.

I agree with removing the D/S...... BUT, my owners manual sez put both cases in neutral and tow away..... (why does it seem like I've typed this before?)
