what do you guys think is causing this? sounds like a stuck lifter or something?
noise is like its a real fast ticka-ticka-ticka...

    1. it only happens when driving, around 30-40 MPH.
    2. i push in the clutch while driving, it goes away.
    3. if i am in neutral. I cant make it make noise at all.
    4. its not road noise, its not the transmission. its coming from the driver side of the engine.

it isnt severe, but its there. and if left unchecked, i fear it could devolve rapidly, and i want my jeep running and in good order this fall.

any questions i can answer of yours, to help you answer my vague engine noise question, let me know. i will get you as much pertinent info as possible.

also....was going to try a jug of the magical restorative oil, but then though against it. not sure how a jug of oil brings a motor back to stock. most likely how a jug of stop leak fixes bad head gaskets.

Sometimes an exhaust gasket leak will sound like a sharp ticking, more noticable under load. You can try hunting for it with a length of flexible tubing held to your ear.

I can't picture an engine noise like you describe not being present all of the time. I agree with Pete on the exhaust leak possibility, or maybe the exhaust pipe is hitting something.

Could be a bearing going (don't ask me how I know :( )

Does it happen when the engine is cold or only after it's warmed up?

Try goosing the throttle by hand to see if it show up momentarily as the engine accelerates; if it does show up get a stethescope and listen at the lower edge of the block while a helper works the throttle.

Sorry- sitting in your yard in neutral with the brakes on & the hood up.

On Tonk I had a banging noise that only showed up at a specific RPM range while driving- I sent a year trying to figure out what it was- exhaust leak, loose metal, crank with too much fore/aft movement etc. No one could understand it, everyone said it can't be rod knock because it didn't happen at idle. Didn't figure it out until it got so bad the oil pressure light started flickering at idle. o_O There was enough pressure to prevent knock under low or no load or at higher rpm when the op went up a bit but there was a sweet spot @ 2000-2500 rpm where the pressure was not enough to prevent knock under load.

What I have you looking with the throttle hard over for is a rod knock that happens as the engine accelerates hard but before the oil pressure comes up enough to make it go away. You really have to slam the lever over, a gradual, slow or even moderately fast increase won't do it.
