So Dad's TJ came with a winch, which I have never had. Just unspooled it a little, and see some surface rust in the lower-down windings of cable.

What's the word on maintenance here? Some kind of penetrating oil? WD-40? Don't worry about it?

    Synthetic rope not an option.

Me, I just squirt ATF on the spool every once in a while. And don't worry about it. Cable is cheap.

But if it's rusty, you aren't getting stuck enough! :D

Galvanized cable is a thing, too.

I have a can of Fluid Film I think I'll put some on mine, I've heard good things about it, think it will work in this application.

I learned about Fluid Film from Sterclan. He's and undercoating expert for over 30 Years. AND, My son was 17 years in the USCG as a damage control man. His last boat was given an experiment at sea. They coated stanchions with : Fluid Film , WD-40, & another rust preventive. Fluid Film came in first, hands down. It's biodegradable: made with Lanolin from sheep's wool ! I love the stuff!

We used it for aircraft flight control cable treatment, but then they don't taxi on dusty runways either, solvent evaped out and left the treatment on the steel cable.
It is good stuff. might attract dirt and dust.

92% VOC... that would do it.
