OK, on the starter solenoid there are three studs. One large one and two small ones. The large one has the battery cable and a large yellow wire, got that part figured out. There are two smaller studs and I have a small blue wire that goes to one of them. Does it matter which small stud is used or are they the same??????

DG, I hooked it up like your pic and she fired right up! Thanks! There is another small stud with the letter "R" beside it. Is this just an extra with nothing hooked up to it?

the "r' terminal 'should' have a wire on it going to the coil. unneeded for hei conversion.

I recall a previous discussion some time ago here about an extra terminal going unused. IIRC, the small post the most lateral to the engine goes unused. I'll go outside and double check on mine this morning.

Edit: just checked. Yep, it's the R terminal that has nothing on any of mine. HTH.

In theory, there should be a wire going from the "R" terminal on the starter to the "+" terminal on the ignition coil. When the starter engages, the "R" terminal sends a full 12V to the coil (rather than the 6-9V it usually gets after running through the ignition resistor) to aid in starting the engine. If yours starts right up for you, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Since there's so much discussion and no one has mentioned looking at this, I'll ask again, did you look at the wiring diagram????

It shows two wires and where they go.

sparky, your wiring diagram does not match the factory diagram. the picture below was taken from the fsm 1046 and clearly shows the three wires coming the solenoid.

now; the question is, does one need the third wire from the r terminal. imho the third wire is not needed.............................. :)

I may be missing something but the wiring diagram that Sparky mentions is the same as the factory wiring diagram. The former being much easier to read though, thanks to a forum member that put it together. Both show 3 wires leading to the solenoid.

You're right Steve, I didn't catch that. It is much easier to read the color one.

I guess when I said two wires, I didn't count the battery cable. Thought it was a given.
