I need some help id’ing what I’ve got here. ‘73 CJ5 with 304 v8, I’m trying to figure out what ignition system I have. I can’t locate a voltage regulator so I assume it’s in the alternator. Don’t have a good pic of it but there is a door on the side of the distributor cap for points adjustment. Thx in advance.

factory installed delco points. I put a pertronix electronic ignition in my delco distributor. kept the points for a trail repair if the electronic fails.

Cool thx! Is there any reason for me to do the change if it’s running well? I’m comfortable changing points and setting the gap but I’m wondering if I can get better fuel burn/reliability by making the swap to pointless ignition? Been looking over the TeamRush upgrades but can’t figure out if going to a Motorcraft cap/ignition is possible on the V8 and if it’d be worthwhile.

Delco.Correct for a '73. Get a copy of the '73 TSM. PSA - Which Manual Should I Buy?

As Jeff says, Team Rush only applies to the Motorcraft ignition used 1978 on. I would keep the Delco. You can convert it to a big cap and HEI style wires if you want, and it will trigger the MSD module just fine. The points will last a long time with the MSD module, since the points signal is then only a trigger and the module switches the coil. MSD will also work with the existing coil. Or go Pertroinix and use that to trigger the MSD module, or not.

You should be concerned about matching the drive gear from any new distributor to the existing cam gear in your engine. There is some risk of the gears self-destructing when swapping distributors.

The gear mesh is the main reason I went pertronix instead of a replacement distributor.
