Any auto guru's out there can help me out?

Ive got a th400 from a jeepster in the chevette, and it works in reverse, it has no drive or 2nd, and ti tries to go backwards in 1st. It doesnt seem to "bind uyp" in d or 2nd, as it should if soem clutches are "welded" together...

Someone installed a b&M shift kit long ago, and its sat without fluid in it... the b&M box had a couple pieces left in it aswell... (Maybe they didnt do it right)

Does it sound like a valve body problem, or are the clutches gone? Where can I get a valve body replacment, rebuild kit?

According to my handy ATSG manual, the symptoms you describe point to about 10 different possibilities, all of which require you to disassemble the tranny. I bought a master rebuild kit on ebay for around $100 when I did my Th400 last year.

Yep I just bought a master rebuild kit for 79, 15 shipping, includes clutches and steel plates, and I just bought a manual for it as well..

According to the manual, what are the possibilites?

$79 sounds pretty cheap, make sure you got a full rebuild kit, with a modulator and the heavy duty front band.

Possibilities range from missing check ball
Missing and damaged seals on the stator.
Backwards assembly of the low roller clutch cage.
forward clutch seals bad or orafices plugged
    oil pump seal damage
    etc

Or maybe even something not in the manual, using an after market valve body with a stock gasket, or plate.

    Pretty much anything.

Yes, full kit... most 400 kits are in that range with buynows.... for $125, could ahve got the same kit but with a new covnerter. No chance its a covnerter problem is it?

"This kit contains all Borg-Warner clutches and "Steel plates
Also included is a Transtec soft parts kit with every rubber seal and gasket that you'll need to complete your rebuild. The kit comes with a new filter, front and rear bushings, and a new adjustable vacuum modulator. This kit also comes with the front band which not all kits include, but should always be changed. The kit comes with everything that you'll need for a full rebuild."

Probabally not the convertor, but I personally wouldn't bother dropping the tranny, rebuiling it and re-install it without replacing the convertor. That kit should be good enough, but has a standard front band, not the heavy duty one.

I know this is a stupid question, but did you check the fluid level with the engine running and the trans in N? Sometimes the simple fixes are the ones we forget(ask me.....I know!)
