While I was waiting for help to remove my tub, I started looking a little closer at my transmission, transfer case, and OD unit. I have a slight oil leak (static) and was trying to figure out where it is leaking from. Anyway, it appears I am missing something from the transmission top cover plate....or am I?

There are 2 holes cast on each side of the cover plate and only one appears to have a "plug" of some sort. Here are links to the pics.

    1. What is missing?
    2. What damage if any could have been caused?

    Thanks

You guessed it, a plug/cap. No damage, just tend to leak a bit like you saw. Even if there it might leak. They are for sealing where the shift rails are. I think someone here posted a link of where to get new ones.

better yet, drill and tap a hole on each end of the tower right between the 2 shift rail holes. then make a small metal plate to fit over the shift rail holes. drill a hole in the plate and a run a bolt through it into the hole you drilled and tapped on the tower. Use some silicone between the plate you made and the shift tower. Also you need to file down the tower where the plates will mate to get a nice smooth mating surface.

The stock plugs may still leak as Glenn mentioned.

Yup, capping the ends of the shift tower is the best way.

HOWEVER.... I have heard stories of the plugs popping out, or the transmission refusing to shift due to hydrolock. If you are going to cap the ends of the tower off, be sure that both ends of the shift rails have a channel for the gear oil to drain back into the case. In my T90, the end that was already capped had grooves in the tower casting, but the other end didn't. I used a dremel tool to grind a groove lengthwise down the bottom side of the shift rail.

Also, my experience is that the stock sheet metal caps will most likely leak. I ended up capping both ends of my tower off to keep it from leaking. This pic is before I had problems with the stock caps leaking. I capped the front as well after I learned the hard way.

good point about the hydrolock. you gotta make sure groves are there for the oil to move through while the shift rails are sliding back and forth.
