Just wondering what ya'll think. The upright tube on the tire carrier I'm making is going to hold about 3 pts. of gear lube. Do ya think I need a breather vent at the top for any reason. I'd rather not use one, but if I hafta, I will.

If you're using the tube of your tire carrier as a storage tank for gear oil, then no, you won't need a breather. The breather on the diff is needed because the motion of the rear end heats the air inside the housing, creating pressure. Without the breather, oil would get forced past the axle and or pinion seals.

Tell us more Dave, excellent idea! How will you extract it when needed?
It would be cool to use air pressure as part of the delivery system... 8)

I'm just using 2x2 tubing for the main body of the tire carrier, which will mount into a reciever hitch. Made caps for both ends of the tube. The bottom cap is like 1/8" steel and the top is 5/16. Top thicker because I had to thread to accept a brass fitting which serves as the fill point. About 1" up from the bottom, on the side of the tubing, I welded in a home made bung type thing that I threaded to accept a pet-**** from an old radiator which will serve to dispense the fluid. Checked for leaks in the welds all thru assembly anf fixed as necessary. Also welded a small nut on top to accept my little flag which some off road parks require. Made that, too. Too sheep to buy one. 3 pints should be enough to fill a diff almost full should you need to. Just need to figure how to get the fluid from the "tank" into the diff. I'm thinking if I carry a small squeeze bottle, that would work.
I know, I know, UWOP. The dryer took a crap for the umteenth time last week and I'm fixing it again. New one here in a day or two. Took the $ I was putting back for a camera. Always something.
Come over and take a pic for the boys ( and ladies), Lynn.

Dave, if I had a digi camera, I'd be over right away for pics!
Sounds like a really cool idea. Hope to see it soon.
I'll get some pics of it in Tioga... right? :D

You'll see it in Tioga Lynn if it doesn't rain. Long ride with no top in the rain. I've heard of using your roll cage for an air tank. Thicker wall stuff/safer plus more volume. I might try it one day when I get a compressor set up. 10 things at a time though, not 11. ;)
