    Hi everyone,

I'm a lifelong jeep owner and tinkerer but this is my first post on the forum. I recently put the T98 transmission in my 1966 CJ5 (it was a nightmare), and obviously the old floor pans from the original T86 did not fit back in. As I understand it, the T98 came standard in this jeep for at least a year or two, so if that's true then there must be some matching floor pans out there somewhere right? I haven't seen any mention of them anywhere but if anyone is the wiser I'd love to hear some feedback!

I'm currently remodeling my floor to accommodate my T18 swap. I'm using CAD (cardboard aided design) templates to come up with a pattern for the sheet metal. Modifying and using original metal as much as I can.

They were actually available from 1956 as a t98 on to 1979 as a T18. The floor pan 56 to 74 is just a bent and welded piece of tin that looks like a jr. Hi shop project. I can try to take some pictures of the one I have but probably can't get to it till the weekend .

Thanks for all the replies, I edited my original post where I mistakenly said the original was a T90 when it was in fact a T86. For some reason I always get them confused. Anyway I guess I'll be home making something!

Dauntless1971 - those look like some pieces of the original floor pans with the center piece custom made, is that right? My goal would be to modify whatever I can make fit, then custom make the missing pieces.

Take a look at these pictures:

    T18FloorPlates1.jpg
    T18FloorPlates2.jpg

This is the T-98/T-18 floor plate in a '73 or '74 intermediate Jeep with a T-18.

Look at the floor underneath this plate in Dauntless71's pic above.

The underlying floor - Jeep PN 985720, same part used with the T-90 or T-86 or T-14 - is cut away to clear the transmission. The new plate covers this hacked-away floor and is anchored to it by sheet metal screws. Like Daryl points out, it looks like an amateur shop project, not a well crafted factory part. Clearly it was made by Jeep to allow the T-98 installation with a minimum number of changes and new parts.

The earlier(?) part in Dauntless71's pic has one fewer folded and welded surface that's present in the '74 part, with Jeep PN 987002. This is a late 60s-1970 part number, and suggests that the part was refined some time in that era, maybe with the extra fold and weld. A sheet metal shop could make this part easily - I could make this part if I had a shear and brake.

Also, there are Jeepers out there that have a side business making stuff for other Jeeper's Jeeps. Typically these are bumpers and roll bars, but your local Jeep/4x4 forum may be able to recommend someone local to you that can make this part for you. Any craftsman with metal working experience and access to sheet metal tools could make this. You aren't necessarily dependent on commercially available panels. If this person made a nice product that was reasonably priced, he/she might be able to sell a dozen or two over the years by advertising on this and the other Jeep forums.

Maybe Daryl was implying he has this part for sale? Send him a PM.

The one I have is for sale but it will be attached to a rust free 70 with a new top for about $6,000.

I have a call in to a junkyard in Minnesota (referred by the guys at Kaiser Willys) and if that comes up empty then I'll be fabricating something myself. This is a hunting vehicle - not a showroom vehicle, so if it doesn't look perfect I won't be too upset. But I would like to end up with something that doesn't look totally rudimentary.
