It appears this is Clutch week!

My new pilot bushing fits the flywheel hole but not tight enough to stay.

    Suggestions?

That's not a good sign.... You *could* carefully "peen" the inside of the crank, the outside of the PB, and use some loctite.....

:) Not sure what you mean by "to stay". To stay how/what?

How's the fit over the input shaft?

I went to check my pilot bushing and it fell out in my hand! Guess it was just spinning around in there. NAPA didnt list one so the search is on . By the way my pilot bushing is in the crankshaft and not in the flywheel.

Jon if you can get it out, take it to a good solid surface and take a pin punch (this is a center punch with a flat end) on the surface that is going to face toward the transmission stake this thing in 3 places by taking the punch and putting it on the face, let the punch hang half off of the surface and strike it firm enough to dimple it and displace material to the outside diameter, do this in 3 places and then tap it back into the flywheel or crank.
It will look like the gif below.

It must be clutch month! A few weeks ago I found out my 3B pilot bushing was spinning after I thought the throwout bearing went bad. Staked the flywheel as suggested.

If it's old and worn get a new one and try the fit, If the new one is still loose then pin punch it like Mcruff said. also, when i put a new pilot bushing in i find it a better fit if i freeze it first and it will set in place with less force (physics). When you get it into place and it warms it will be tight (if the crank end isn't warn).

This is the L-134 flywheel. I punched out the old egg-shaped bushing with a socket and hammer. It took quite a bit of effort to knock it out. I placed the new one in and it kinda stayed. When I moved the flywheel, the bushing fell out. It fit the input shaft fine btw.

Aftermarket parts are poor fits. My starter bushing for the bellhousing also won't stay. That too was egged out.

Will it swell if I soak it in oil per another thread? I will try staking it in 3-places

Boy thats a new one on me:shock:, somebody must have some kinda spongy bronze I've never seen.;) Metal does really absorb anything other than a few pourous materials like iron.

Pilot bearings are sintered bronze (small particles of bronze welded together by heat and pressure). They will absorb oil, but they definitely don't swell.

Sintered bronze does not absorb oil on its own, it is vacuum impregnated when manufactured, if you get it hot enough for the oil to leak out all at once its junk and will not re-absorb oil.

I may be missing something here, but why not just buy a different pilot bushing? Could be the one you have is just built too small.

    I don't think I would fight it.
