I wanted to post a conclusion to my ring gear repair for the future reference here on ECJ5. Many thanks to whoever here suggested this procedure a few months ago! 8)

My ring gear on Putt-Putt was chow-mored pretty bad. I picked up a new one last week and started on it last night since it was warm out.

Note that there are two sides to the ring gear and there should be a little an extra notch/saw "nick" on one side. This faces the starter, not the trans. Using a 3/4 inch punch, I cold hammered the gear every 3-4 inches around the perimeter until it fell off the flywheel. I test fitted the new ring and it wasn't about to go on. (what it is supposed to do)

I cleaned it up with some Brake Kleen so it was free of oil, gease and dirt. I put the flywheel on newspaper and placed it in the freezer on top of the frozen fish (use fish, not beef or chicken ;) ) I wanted to make sure the flywheel shrunk as much as possible so I left it in there 24 hours.

Tonight, I tossed the new ring gear in the oven and turned it on to 400*. I didn't want to shock heat the gear so I allowed it to warm gradually as the oven reach temp.

During the heat up, I was preparing for this narrow "window" of opportunity that I would have so I had a board next to the stove and hammers ready to tap it on. With oven mits on --the timer beeped signalling 400*!!!! I grabbed the flywheel out of the freezer and placed it next to the oven --I quickly grabbed the ring gear and placed it on the flywheel.

IT DROPPED RIGHT ON WITH ROOM TO SPARE!!!!!!! Huh??? I could spin the thing! Um --Ok I guess.... OOOPS! It was on backwards! I flipped it and it again fell into place.

I put it outside to assume room temperature --err garage that is.

Done! the temperatures equalized and the ring is tight as all get out!!

Moral of the story, put the torch away and just use your kitchen appliances!! :D
