Hey everyone I have really enjoyed this website so far. I have a 1967 Jeep CJ5 i got from my grandpa (its been in the family as long as I can remember) and I have been slowly getting it up and running. I have some issues with the OD, it seems to only operate in OD (overdrive stick shift all the way forward). I removed the OD and I found that the Special lock washer was completely rounded off. It is my suspicion that that is why the direct drive is not working. I was curious what all of your thoughts were. Let me know if the photos don't show up. At a minimum you will need a new lock washer and snap ring. Was the nut still tight or had it loosened and backed out? One question is where did the snap ring go? Depending on your mechanical abilities it would be a great time to send it to Herm the Overdrive guy to get it freshened up.

What Daryl said. Lots of good info on Herm's site too. If you choose to work on it yourself, Advance Adapters has most of the parts available. They bought the manufacturing rights from Warn for the Warn/Saturn overdrives I believe. It will likely need to be disassembled and cleaned well. They are not agressively oiled (they only scavenge oil from the t-case through that trough), so they tend to collect any metal shavings...the snap ring and lock washer tabs got ground up and went somewhere. I bought a Jeep with a bad rear transmission bearing, all the ground-up metal was packed in the OD.

Here is a link to AA site for OD parts. Herm sells them too...

I agree - I would pull it and check things at the very least. I've been able to do most of the work myself outside pressing some new needle bearings and such on the planetary gear housing. I sent one of mine to Herm since he had the jigs to do it right.
