MSD & Pertronix Compatibility

    Just brainstormin' here guys.

    Has anyone ever used an MSD unit in conjunction with a Pertronix ignition system? I'm thinking the hotter the spark the better, I might even spring for some split-fire plugs... :shock:

    Don't know about the MSD with Pertronix but I wouldn't bother with the Splitfires.

    Ditto on the splitfire plugs. Have several friends that are drag racers. No noticeable difference useing splitfire or another regular plug.

    No reason not to use Pertronix with the MSD. The pertronix is simply a trigger, and the MSD should respond to a more accurate (than points) trigger...


    Splitfire plugs? Uh, no, IMO. Nothing more than a cheap Chumpion spark plug with the ground elactrode split down the middle.

    Yea,
    MSD instructions have a schematic page for Pertronix. I had a boss who worked for Autolite and he said multiple electrode plugs are a waste, the spark will jump to the path of least resistance to one spot, no matter how many point it has to jump too. There a waste. Platinum or Iridium plugs maintain a constant gap through their life and are great for performance. Iridium is really spendy though (I don't even know if they make one for the 225).

    Yeah, I know about the Iridium plugs. I just spent ~7 bux per plug for new ones for my '01 Suburban. Got 72k out of the stock ones, I just hope they come out of the heads without major trauma. <crossing fingers>

    I put high temp anti-seize (2500 deg) on my plugs and remove them look at them pop them back in every year or so so they don't weld themselves in. With the salt they lay down up here plugs sometimes don't come out (in one piece). It's a sad day when you look at your friend and say " we going to have to pull the head to finish your tune-up!"
